FUNCTION
AND RULES OF
DIFFERENTIATION
What is the Derivative of a Function?
SLOPE
a slope of a line is the change in y coordinate
with respect to the change in x coordinate.
Tangent line
the straight line that touches the
curve at a point.
Find the derivatives of
the following functions:
2
1. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 5
2.𝑓 𝑥 =1/x
3.f(x) = 8/√x
Try this:
2
1. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 2𝑥
2. f(x) - √x
The derivative of a constant is zero.

RULE 3: The Derivative of a
Constant Times a Function
The derivative of a constant multiplies a
function is the constant times the derivative
as illustrated by the formula below.
EXAMPLE 1. Find the derivative of 𝑦 = 5𝑥.
EXAMPLE 2. Find the derivative of 𝑦 =
2𝒙𝟓 .
EXAMPLE 3. Find the derivative of 𝑦 = -
10𝑥.
EXAMPLE 4. Find the derivative of 𝑦 =
27𝒙𝟑 .
EXAMPLE 5. Find the derivative of 𝑦 =
12𝑥 2 .
RULE 4: The Derivative of Sum and
Differences
Let 𝑦 = 𝑢 + 𝑣 and 𝑦 = 𝑢 − 𝑣 where 𝑢 = 𝑓(𝑥)
and 𝑣 = 𝑔(𝑥) are differentiable functions of
x, then
EXAMPLE 1. Find the derivative of 𝑦 = 3𝒙𝟐 +

EXAMPLE 2. Find the derivative of 𝑦 = 1/2𝒙𝟐 +
8𝑥 +21.
EXAMPLE 3. Find the derivative of 𝑦 = 5𝒙𝟒 -
12𝒙𝟑 − x.
RULE 5: The Derivative of a
Let 𝑦 = 𝑢 ∙ 𝑣, where 𝑢 = 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑣 = 𝑔(𝑥)
Product
are differentiable functions of x, then
EXAMPLE 1. Find the derivative of
2
𝑦 = (𝑥 + 2𝑥)(2𝑥 − 1).
EXAMPLE 2. Find the derivative of
𝑦 = (𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 )(𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 2)
EXAMPLE 3. Find the derivative of
𝑦 = (2𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 )(𝑥 2 − 2)
