CHAPTER 10
METRIC MEASURES – PART 2

Conversion of Capacity
Litres and mililitres are the commonly used units of capacity.
The basic unit of measuring capacity is litre.

Conversion table for units of capacity

𝟏
1 L = 1000 mL 1 mL = L
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎

1. Convert the following

a) 78 L into mL

1 L = 1000 mL
78 L = 78 x 1000 = 78000 mL

b) 190 L and 125 mL into mL

1 L = 1000 mL
190 L = 190 x 1000 = 190000 mL

Thus, 190 L and 125 mL = 190000 mL + 125 mL

=190125 mL
c) 5600 mL into L and mL

𝟏
1 mL = L
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎

5600 mL = 5000 mL + 600

𝟓𝟎𝟎𝟎
5000 mL = = 5L
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎

Thus, 5600 mL = 5L + 600 mL

d) 32 L into mL e) 7426 mL into L and mL

Addition and Subtraction of the units of Capacity

1. Solve the following:

a) 345 L and 899 mL + 456 L and 671 mL

Thus,
L mL
345 L and 899 mL + 456 L and 671 mL
345 899
= 802 L and 570 mL
+ 456 671

802 570
b) 281 L and 600 mL - 110 L and 784 mL

Thus,
L mL
281 L and 600 mL - 110 L and 784 mL
281 600
= 170 L and 816 mL
-110 784

170 816

c) 120 L and 516 mL + 189 L and 713 mL

d) 679 L and 134 mL - 578 L and 600 mL

Real Life Applications

1. The length of a rope is 341 cm and that of another rope is 47 cm and 27 mm.

Find the total length of both the ropes. Also, find the difference between the

length of both ropes.

Sol: The length of the first rope = 341 cm

The length of the second rope = 47 cm and 27 mm

The total length of both the ropes = 341 cm + 47 cm and 27 mm

= 388 cm and 27 mm

The difference between the length of both ropes = 341 cm - 47 cm and 27 mm

= 293 cm and 73 mm
2. Anup's mother mixed 213g and 760 mg of sugar with 554g and 120 mg of

mashed apples to make apple syrup. Find the total weight of the apple

syrup.

Sol: The weight of sugar = 213g and 760 mg

The weight of mashed apples = 554g and 120 mg

Total weight of the apple syrup = 213g and 760 mg + 554g and 120 mg

= 767 g and 880 mg

3. A tank has 600 L and 500 mL of water. 300 L and 450 mL more water is added

to the tank. Find out the total quantity of water in the tank.

Sol: Amount of water a tank had = 600 L and 500 mL

Amount of water added to the tank = 300 L and 450 mL

The total quantity of water in the tank= 600L and 500mL + 300 L and 450 mL

= 900 L and 950 mL
