Background of the Study

Getting stains when doing certain everyday tasks is a hassle especially since looking
neat and tidy is a necessity. A stain is a discoloration that can be clearly distinguished
from the surface or the material it is located on. Commonly, products like wet wipes or
alcohol are used to clean stains in clothes. But most of the time, these don't work well
and sometimes even end up making the stain messier. And usually, leaving the stain in
clothes for a long time and not cleaning it immediately will make it harder to clean out
when you get the chance to. So, to find a solution to this problem, this study will test
the potential and effectiveness of the calamansi, baking soda, and fabric softener as a
scented portable stain cleaner.

Calamansi extract contains citric acid, which is known for its stain-removing
capabilities, particularly in cosmetic formulations (Young et al., 2020). And because of
the acidity that can be found in calamansi, it is commonly used for removing different
types of stains on clothes. Natural surfactants found in calamansi can lower the surface
tension of water, allowing for better penetration and removal of stains from fabrics
(Masayuki, 1996). The other ingredient used for this research is baking soda. Baking
soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has been shown to be an effective fabric stain cleaner due
to its alkaline properties and ability to enhance the performance of other cleaning
agents. Research indicates that baking soda can optimize pH levels, promoting enzyme
action in stain removal compositions (Mandy & Fatigante, 1994). Additionally, it serves
as a key ingredient in various cleaning formulations, effectively degrading organic
matter and preventing stain reappearance (André & Patrício, 2020).

Traditional and natural stain cleaners are also much safer options as they contain
less harsh chemicals. One of the main ingredients used in this research is calamansi.
Calamansi extract is generally recognized as safe, with minimal irritation reported in
cosmetic applications (Young et al., 2020). Calamansi, being a natural ingredient,
reduces exposure to harmful chemicals found in many commercial cleaners, aligning
with the growing consumer trend towards eco-friendly products (Lugay, 2023). Unlike
synthetic cleaners, calamansi solutions do not contribute to environmental pollution,
making them a sustainable choice (Lugay, 2023). In addition, commercial stain removers
contain harsh chemicals that may pose risks of skin irritation or toxicity (Andersen,
2001). Meanwhile the other ingredient, which is baking soda, is biologically compatible
and has a lower abrasivity compared to harsher chemical cleaners, making it safer for
both users and surfaces (Li, 2017). Baking soda is non-toxic and poses minimal health
risks compared to many chemical cleaners, which can contain harmful substances(Woo,
2013). It is biologically compatible and has antibacterial properties, making it safe for
use on various fabrics without causing irritation (Li, 2017).

Statement of the Problem

A common problem that many people encounter when doing everyday tasks is
getting stains on clothes. Whether its getting stains when eating, cooking, writing using
pen, painting, and doing other tasks. This can make a person look dirty and untidy,
which is a problem especially when changing clothes or washing clothes isn’t an
available option. Additionally, letting a stain stay in clothes for long periods of time will
make it harder to clean afterwards, potentially staining the clothes permanently. This
study aims to develop a solution that can clean stains whenever, regardless of whatever
a person may be doing and wherever they may be. This study will also find out the
potential of different natural resources for cleaning and disinfecting purposes.
