ECTE202_Week 4 Winter 2025 Workshop

The document covers the analysis of second order circuits, specifically focusing on RLC series and parallel circuits. It includes methods for determining the complete response of these circuits and provides multiple examples illustrating the step response under various conditions. Key concepts discussed include the unit step function and the behavior of circuits when subjected to sudden changes in voltage or switch positions.

ECE202: CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS

WEEK 5
SECOND ORDER CIRCUITS (CHAPTER 8)
RECAP

• We understood the concept of unit step function.

• For first order circuits,
 Studied method of analysis for source-free RC/RL circuits.
 Studied method for analysis for the step response/ complete
response of the first order systems.
• Later we moved to analysis of second order systems,
 Studied method of analysis for Source-free RLC series circuit or RLC
parallel circuits.

In this lecture, we will develop the method for determining the

complete response of second order circuits.

RLC Series Circuit – Example 1

The circuit shown in the figure below has been in operation for a long time.
At t = 0, the source voltage suddenly jumps to 250 V. Find v()(t) for t ≥ 0.
RLC Series Circuit – Example 2

The initial energy stored in the circuit in figure below is zero. Find v()(t) for t ≥ 0.
RLC Series Circuit – Example 3

The switch in the circuit shown in the figure below has been in position for a long
time. At t = 0 the switch moves instantaneously to position b. Find
a) v0(0+)
b) dv0()(Q+)/dt
c) v()(t) for t ≥ 0.
RLC Series Circuit – Example 4

The switch in the circuit shown below has been closed for a long time before it is opened
at t = 0. Assume that the circuit parameters are such that the response is underdamped.
a) Derive the expression for v()(t) as a function of Vg, wd, C, and R for for t ≥ 0.
b) Derive the expression for the value of t when the magnitude of v0 is maximum.
STEP RESPONSE OF PARALLEL RLC CIRCUIT
STEP RESPONSE OF PARALLEL RLC CIRCUIT
STEP RESPONSE OF PARALLEL RLC CIRCUIT
RLC PARALLEL CIRCUIT – EXAMPLE 5

The two switches in the circuit seen in the figure below operate synchronously. When
switch 1 is in position a, switch 2 is in position d. When switch 1 moves to position b,
switch 2 moves to position c. Switch 1 has been in position a for a long time. At t = 0,
the switches move to their alternate positions.
Find v()(t) for t ≥ 0.
RLC PARALLEL CIRCUIT – EXAMPLE 6

The switch in the circuit shown below has been in position a for a long time. At t = 0
the switch moves instantaneously to position b.
Find v()(t) for t ≥ 0.
RLC PARALLEL CIRCUIT – EXAMPLE 7

The switch in the circuit shown below has been open a long time before closing at t = 0
Find IL(t) for t ≥ 0.
RLC PARALLEL CIRCUIT – EXAMPLE 8

The switch in the circuit shown below has been open for a long time before
closing at t = 0. Find
a) v0(t) for t ≥ 0+,
b) IL(t) for t ≥ 0.
