G7 - Refraction

The document outlines the concept of refraction, including definitions, principles, and practical applications using the PhET simulation tool. It discusses the behavior of light as it transitions between different media, such as air, glass, and water, and includes activities for students to explore these concepts. Additionally, it connects the principles of refraction to modern architectural designs in the UAE and poses higher-order thinking questions related to the topic.

To remember what happens to light when it is refracted, think of the word:

What happens in refraction: glass to air
When light is refracted as it travels from air to glass:
angle of incidence < angle of refraction
i < r

As the light ray travels from glass into air

it moves away from the normal.

In general, when light rays travel from a more glass

dense medium (glass) to a less dense medium
(air) they ‘bend’ away from the normal. air

If the two surfaces of the block are parallel, then i < r

the ray at the start is parallel to the ray at the
end.
Refraction – angle of incidence = 0°
What happens to light travelling from air through a glass block when the angle
of incidence is 0°?

 i = 0°

When the angle of incidence is 0

the light ray is not deviated from air

UAE IDENTITY

Discuss how the concept of light refraction is applied in

the design of modern UAE buildings, such as the use of
glass façades in iconic structures like the Burj Khalifa.

L3
1. Imagine you are tasked with creating a new
type of lens for cameras used in desert environments
like the UAE. How could you apply the principles of
Higher refraction to improve image clarity and reduce glare?

Order 2. Why do some objects appear distorted

underwater? Can you explain how this
Thinking knowledge might be useful for underwater
photography or marine exploration?

Questions 3. What differences do you observe in the

bending of light when it passes from air to
water compared to air to glass? Why do you
think these differences occur?.
