Assignment 1 (4)

The document outlines an assignment for a course on basic reinforced concrete design, due on September 17, 2024. It includes tasks such as calculating the ultimate moment of resistance for beams made of specific concrete and steel grades, designing a singly reinforced rectangular beam for given loads, and determining the maximum factored load for a cantilever beam. Students are required to make reasonable assumptions for any missing data and provide sketches of their final designs.

CE3050A: BASIC REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

Assignment No. 1
Due date: 17/09/2024, by the beginning of class.
1. Find the ultimate moment of resistance of the beam shown in Figure 1. The beam is made
of M25 concrete and Fe500 steel.

2. Find the ultimate moment of resistance of the beam shown in Figure 2. The beam is made
of M30 concrete and Fe500 steel.

3. Design a singly reinforced rectangular concrete beam that has to carry an imposed load of
15 kN/m, and a dead load of 5 kN/m (excluding self-weight). The beam is simply
supported across two 230 mm thick brick walls, with a clear spacing of 6 m. The beam is
exposed to severe environmental conditions. Use Fe500 steel for your design. Do all
necessary checks and draw a neat sketch of your final design. (Assume 8mm diameter
stirrups.)

4. A reinforced concrete cantilever beam has a cross-sectional area of 300 × 450 mm2, and is
reinforced with 6-16 bars (distributed in two layers) in the tension side. The beam has a
clear span of 3m, and is made of M30 concrete and Fe500 steel with a clear cover of 25
mm. (Assume 8mm diameter stirrups.). Determine what is the maximum factored load that
the beam can carry.

5. Design a reinforced concrete rectangular beam with a cross-sectional area of 250 × 450
mm2 that has to carry a factored moment of 220 kNm. The beam is simply supported across
two 230 mm thick brick walls, with a clear spacing of 5 m. The beam is made of M30
concrete and Fe500 steel. Do all necessary checks and draw a neat sketch of your final
design. (Assume 8mm diameter stirrups.)

Note: Make and clearly state your (reasonable) assumptions for any missing data.
