Lesson Plan: Applying Laws of Cosines in Solving Oblique Triangles

Objectives:
• Knowledge: Understand the concept of oblique triangles and the laws of cosines.
• Skills: Apply the laws of cosines to solve real-life problems involving oblique
triangles.
• Attitudes: Develop confidence in solving complex trigonometric problems.
• Values: Appreciate the importance of trigonometry in various applications.
Content/Topic: Applying Laws of Cosines in Solving Oblique Triangles
Learning Resources/Materials/Equipment:
• Whiteboard and markers
• Projector and screen
• Handouts with oblique triangle problems
• Calculators
• Protractors
• Rulers
Procedures:
4.1 Introductory Activity (10 minutes):
• Display two oblique triangles on the board.
• Ask the class: "What do you know about oblique triangles?"
• Instruct students to discuss with their partner and write down any prior
knowledge about oblique triangles.
4.2 Activity (15 minutes):
• Present the formula for the Law of Cosines: c² = a² + b² - 2ab * cos(C), where 'c'
is the side opposite the angle 'C'.
• Provide an example problem and guide students through solving it using the Law
of Cosines.
• Hand out practice problems for students to work on in pairs.
4.3 Analysis (10 minutes):
• Discuss the practice problems as a class.
• Ask five questions related to the topic, such as: "When should you use the Law of
Cosines instead of the Law of Sines?"
• Allow students to answer and facilitate a brief discussion.
4.4 Abstraction (10 minutes):
• Present five multiple-choice questions related to the topic. For example: "In an
oblique triangle, which formula is used to find an angle when all three sides are
known?"
• Discuss the correct answers.
4.5 Application (20 minutes):
• Divide the class into three groups.
• Group 1 (Reporting): Prepare and present real-life examples of situations where
the Law of Cosines can be applied.
• Group 2 (Coloring): Draw diagrams of oblique triangles and use the Law of
Cosines to find missing side lengths or angles.
• Group 3 (Role-playing): Act out scenarios involving oblique triangles and use the
Law of Cosines to solve problems.
4.6 Generalization (10 minutes):
• Ask at least three questions that encourage students to generalize their
understanding of the topic, such as: "What are the common misconceptions
when applying the Law of Cosines?"
5. Assessment/Evaluation (15 minutes):
Instructions:
• You have 15 minutes to complete this assessment individually.
• Show all your work and write down the formula you use for each question.
• Use the given diagram and information to solve the problems.
• Check your answers carefully before submitting.
Diagram for Questions 1 to 4:

In the diagram above:

• Side 'a' is opposite angle 'A.'
• Side 'b' is opposite angle 'B.'
• Side 'c' is opposite angle 'C.'
Questions:
In the given oblique triangle, if side 'a' is 8 cm, side 'b' is 10 cm, and angle 'C' is 45
degrees, find the length of side 'c.'
Calculate the measure of angle 'A' in the same triangle if side 'b' is 12 cm, side 'c' is 15
cm, and angle 'C' is 60 degrees.
In an oblique triangle, if side 'b' is 7 inches, side 'c' is 9 inches, and angle 'A' is 30
degrees, calculate the length of side 'a.'
Determine the size of angle 'B' in the triangle from question 3.
Given an oblique triangle with side 'a' measuring 6 units, side 'b' measuring 8 units, and
angle 'A' measuring 120 degrees, find the length of side 'c.'
Calculate the size of angle 'C' in the triangle from question 5.
In a different oblique triangle, if side 'a' is 12 meters, side 'b' is 15 meters, and angle 'A'
is 75 degrees, determine the length of side 'c.'
Find the measure of angle 'B' in the triangle from question 7.
Answer Key:
1. 6 cm
2. 45 degrees
3. 4.5 inches
4. 60 degrees
5. 4 units
6. 60 degrees
7. 9 meters
8. 30 degrees
6. Assignment (5 minutes):
• Assign two questions related to the lesson for homework, such as: "Find the
missing side 'a' in an oblique triangle given side 'b,' side 'c,' and angle 'B'."
