Alternative Assessment for Learning

What is an Alternative Assessment?

Assessment is generally defined as the process of gathering quantitative and/or qualitative
data for the purpose of making decisions, whereas assessment of learning focuses on the
systematic and purpose-oriented collection, analysis, and interpretation of evidence. In
contrast, assessment for learning identifies the needs of students to modify instruction or
classroom activities.

Traditional assessment relies on objective (e.g., multiple-choice) and subjective (e.g., essay)
paper-and-pencil tests. These are widely used due to their ease of design and scoring. On
the other hand, alternative assessment uses nontraditional methods to collect performance-
based or product-oriented data.

Key Features of Alternative Assessment

1. Assessment is based on authentic tasks that demonstrate learners' ability to accomplish
communication goals.
2. Instructors and learners focus on communication, not on right and wrong answers.
3. Learners help set the criteria for successful completion of communication tasks.
4. Learners have opportunities to assess themselves and their peers.

Types of Alternative Assessments

1. Performance Assessment: Tasks require learners to demonstrate knowledge through task
performance and product creation. A high degree of realism ensures authenticity.
2. Portfolio Assessment: Students create a collection of learning artifacts accompanied by
reflections to showcase their progress. It provides a comprehensive way to evaluate
learning outcomes.
3. Other Strategies: Includes the use of rubrics, rating scales, and checklists for assessing
cognitive, psychomotor, and dispositional outcomes.

Models of Alternative Assessment

1. Emergent Assessment: Based on Michael Scriven's goal-free evaluation model (1967),
this method assesses both intended and unintended outcomes. It uses qualitative data to
evaluate the effects of instruction.
2. Developmental Assessment: Tracks learners' growth by comparing pre-test and post-test
data. It measures progress over time to identify development.
3. Authentic Assessment: Focuses on real-world applications and tasks that mimic real-life
scenarios to provide meaningful evaluation.
Conclusion
Alternative assessments provide a more comprehensive and meaningful way of evaluating
student learning. They focus on authentic, learner-centered approaches that encourage self-
assessment and reflection, making learning more relevant and effective.
