ISO 14001 is an international standard that specifies the requirements of an organisation’s sustainability
management system (SMS).
Access the following document to answer this question.
ISO 14001 Key benefits
https://www.iso.org/publication/PUB100372.html
Outline four of the benefits that environmental management systems can bring to a business or organisation.
a. Cost Savings: Organizations can reduce operational expenses related to energy, water, and
materials by discovering efficiencies in resource use and waste management.
c. Legal Compliance: By assisting in the comprehension and observance of environmental rules and
regulations, ISO 14001 lowers the possibility of facing fines, penalties, and legal ramifications.
d. Improved Reputation: Putting ISO 14001 into practice shows a dedication to environmental
responsibility, which enhances reputation among consumers, stakeholders, and the community.
Access the Duty to provide and maintain adequate and accessible facilities section of the WHS Regulation
applicable to your state/territory to answer the next question.
a. Identify who in the workplace should ensure the provision of adequate facilities for workers,
including drinking water.
Access the Drinking water section of the Code of practice on Managing the work environment and facilities
applicable to your state/territory to answer the next two questions.
Guidelines for workplace health and safety state that drinking water supplies should be placed
in a convenient location and be simple for employees to get to. This usually means that it should be
placed in common locations where employees can access it without experiencing undue hardship,
like break rooms or kitchenettes.
Water for drinking should be at the right temperature to be consumed. While exact
temperatures may differ, drinking water should normally be available at a temperature that is suitable
for employees to consume without putting their health at danger or creating pain.
Sustainable work practices offer both long-term and short-term benefits. For business organisations, the
benefits that it gets to enjoy will also be felt by its employees.
List the six primary benefits of sustainable work practices in the workplace.
a. Cost Savings: Through energy savings, waste reduction, and efficiency gains, implementing
sustainable practices frequently results in lower operational expenses.
a. Enhanced Reputation: Companies that place a high priority on sustainability gain the respect
and trust of stakeholders, consumers, and staff members.
c. Regulation Compliance: Companies can stay out of trouble legally and financially by following
environmental regulations and standards.
f. Long-term Resilience: Companies with a sustainable business model are better able to adjust to
shifting market and environmental conditions, maintaining long-term viability and resilience.
Some questions in this Practical Assessment require you to refer to environmental and
corporate sustainability legislation, and regulations applicable to the state/territory where your
workplace/organisation is based or located in.
For your assessor’s reference, indicate below which state/territory your workplace/organisation
is based or located in by ticking the box that corresponds to your answer.
When completing these tasks, refer to the environmental and corporate sustainability
legislation and regulations applicable to the state/territory you ticked below.
This case study assessment requires you to identify sustainable work practices, reporting
channels, and inefficient work practices in your workplace.
This assessment is divided into three tasks:
Case Study 1: Stabilising Sustainability
o Task 1: Practicing Sustainability
This assessment includes detailed scenarios and simulated environments, providing all
necessary information required to complete relevant tasks and activities, based on the
simulated business, Bounce Fitness <https://bouncefitness.precisiongroup.com.au/>.
This will not require you to access a real workplace, however, some tasks to be completed are
similar to those typically done in a real workplace.
You are working as a receptionist in Bounce Fitness. As part of your induction, you are required to
study the Bounce Fitness documents on sustainability. Specifically, you must identify
organisational protocols that apply to your work role that are related to:
Conducting sustainable work practices and its benefits
Reporting breaches in environmental legislations.
Also, as part of your organisation’s quarterly assessment for sustainable work practices, you must
compute your daily electricity consumption for work equipment. You are tasked to compare your
current resource usage and identify which of your work tasks is energy inefficient.
General computer usage
Energy consumption: 2.0 kWh
Sound system usage
Energy consumption: 1.8 kWh
Bounce Fitness audio-visual presentation through television
Energy consumption: 2.5 kWh
Access and review the following documents which will help you answer the next tasks:
Minimising Use of Resources Policies and Procedures
Resource Efficiency Policies and Procedures
https://bouncefitness.precisiongroup.com.au/policies-and-procedures/administrative-
policy-procedures/
Access the Minimising Use of Resources Policies and Procedures provided in the case study
above to answer the following questions.
a. Identify the three negative impacts that businesses can have towards the environment.
i.
i. Resource Depletion: Excessive use of raw materials, energy, and water r
esources.
ii.
ii. Pollution: Chemical pollutants that degrade the quality of the air, water, a
nd soil; emissions; waste production.
iii. iii. Biodiversity Loss: Industrial activities lead to ecological deterioration and
habitat destruction.
b. Identify the three sustainable work practices that Bounce Fitness implements.
i.
i. Reusable Bottle usage: Promoting the usage of reusable water bottles a
mong employees and customers in place of single-use ones.
ii.
ii. Reusable gym towels: Rather than using paper towels that are only use
d once, encourage members to bring their own towels.
ii.
Environmental Impact: Less paper use results in less carbon footprint and
fewer deforestation.
a. Identify the two legislations that Bounce Fitness complies to for enhancing resource
efficiency.
i. Environmental Protection Act: Generally, this law governs actions that could have
an effect on the environment, like pollution control and waste management.
ii. Resource recovery, recycling, and trash reduction are the main topics of the trash
Management and Resource Recovery Act.
b. Identify the form that you should use to report breaches in environmental legislations and
standards.
The Resource Efficiency Policies and Procedures document usually specifies the
format for reporting breaches. For the precise form name or format, please refer to the
document.
d. Identify whom in the organisation should you report environmental breaches to.
Access the Recommended Daily Energy Consumption section of the Resource Efficiency Policies
and Procedures document in the case study above to answer the following questions about
identifying inefficiencies in resource usage.
a. Identify your energy consumption for the following work tasks according to the case study
Stabilising Sustainability.
b. From the gathered data above, identify the two work tasks that consumes energy beyond
the recommended daily consumption.
i. The audio-visual presentation of Bounce Fitness on television (2.5 kWh) - This uses
more energy than is generally advised on a daily basis.
ii. General computer usage (2.0 kWh): This may go over recommended limits based on the
daily energy consumption threshold.
c. Identify the ideal daily energy consumption for general computer usage in the workplace.
The part of the Resource Efficiency Policies and Procedures paper titled "Recommended
Daily Energy Consumption" should include the recommended daily energy consumption
for general computer usage. For information on the precise recommended value, please
refer to that section.
d. Identify how you can lower energy consumption while presenting the Bounce Fitness
audio-visual presentation through a television.
Use Energy-Saving options: Turn down the TV's brightness and select energy-saving
options.
Turn Off When Not in Use: To save energy consumption, make sure the TV is off during
breaks or when you're not actively presenting.
Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Equipment: Take into consideration utilizing more recent,
power-efficient TVs and audio-visual equipment.
This Workplace Assessment Task requires you to participate in at least three sustainable work
practices.
This assessment is divided into four tasks:
