Template - Interleaving and Spaced Retrieval

The document discusses the Forgetting Curve and strategies to enhance memory retention, specifically spaced retrieval and interleaving. It emphasizes the importance of revisiting material at increasing intervals and mixing different subjects during study sessions. An example schedule is provided to help create a focused study plan that targets specific challenging topics.

The Forgetting Curve, a concept introduced by Hermann Ebbinghaus in the

late 19th century, illustrates how information is lost over time when there is no
attempt to retain it. This curve steeply declines within the first days of learning,
indicating that without reinforcement, the memory of newly acquired
knowledge fades quickly. However, strategies such as spaced retrieval and
interleaving can significantly mitigate this effect. Spaced retrieval involves
revisiting and practicing the learned material at increasing intervals over time,
while interleaving entails mixing different topics or subjects in a study session,
rather than focusing on just one. These techniques not only help in retaining
information more effectively but also in applying knowledge across various
contexts.

An example schedule is provided below; notice how small, specific topics

have been chosen (ideally ones you find most challenging) rather than a
subject as a whole – this will make your study session more focused!

Why don’t you have a go at creating your own schedule using the template
below? It shows five weekdays with three study slots each day, for five
subjects/topics in total, however you can adapt this to whatever suits you.
Remember to keep study sessions short, 25 minutes is enough.

You might find that a topic you include is particularly challenging so you could
include it again in your week 2 schedule. You could then switch it with another
topic in week 3 and bring it back in week 4.
