X bar R Chart explained with a solved example

The document explains the X bar R chart, a tool used in Statistical Process Control (SPC) for monitoring the mean and variation of continuous data samples. It outlines the steps to create the chart in Excel, including calculating the sample mean and range, and provides a solved example with detailed calculations. The importance of analyzing the R chart before the X bar chart is emphasized, as it reflects process variability and indicates out-of-control situations.

Statistical Process Control (SPC)
Discussion point
Hi Readers! Today we will discuss about the Mean and Range chart. It is also called X̅ – R
chart. This type of chart is used for variable data or continuous data. Sample size should
lie between 2<n<10.

Why is X bar R chart used for?

* X bar chart monitors the mean between sample values.

* R chart monitors the variation within samples and R chart is analysed before X-bar
chart to determine out of control situations, as R chart reflects process variability,
which should be brought into control.
* If R chart shows out of control range, then the X-bar chart is meaningless.

Calculate the sample mean and range for each sample

Sub-group Mean :

X Bar = (X1 + X2 + X3 + …….+Xn )

_______________________________
n
n = Number of samples in a subgroup.
Step 2.

Subgroup Range :

R bar = X max – X min (Within each group) & Average range (R bar)

R Bar = R1 + R2 + R3 + ……………. Rk
____________________________________
K
k =Number of subgroups used to determine the Average Range
Step 3.

Grand Average

X = X1 + X2 + X3 …………… + Xk

K

K = Number of subgroups used to determine the Grand average.

length of the sample. USL & LSL of sample 6 +/- 2. We did it For the 25 Nos subgroup. Then we took the sum of
individual subgroups and an average of subgroups. Additional information if Sample size n= 5 then A = 0.577 , D =

Interpretation of X bar R chart

From the above chart, it is seen that

the average subgroup data is within
the upper & lower control limits. No
data point is outside of the control
limit. If any data falls outside of The
control limit then in that case, the
revised control limit needs to be
defined.

The range of subgroups is also

within the upper & lower control
limits.
