5) Let A and B be two square matrices of size n such that 2 is an eigenvalue of B.

Then there exists a non-zero vector X such that 2AX − ABX = 0.

Exercise 2

Let u(1,m,0,-1), v(1,1,3,0) and w(0,0,-1,1) be vectors in ℝ4 .

1) Are v and w orthogonal?

2) Find m such that u is orthogonal to v.

3) a) Determine (u − v). (u − v) in terms of m.

b) Deduce m if ‖u − v‖ = 4.

4) Find m such that the distance between u and v is 10.

5) Let θ be the angle formed between v and w. Determine cos(θ).

6) Apply the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality to the vectors u and v.
