Sustainable

Development
OBJECTIVES: 1
identify and evaluate the viability and
impacts of business in the community;

formulate recommendations and strategies on how to

minimize the negative impact and maximize the
2
positive impact if a business on the community; and

analyze and evaluate the viability of a business

3 and its impact on the community.
Sustainable
Development
Sustainable Development means meeting
the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.

Adopted by the General Assembly of

the United Nations in 2015, the 17
“Sustainable Development Goals”
(SDGs) are the layout to achieve a better
and more sustainable world for all by 2030.
3 PILLARS OF
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
SOCIAL PILLAR
The social pillar refers to the community
and everyone in it - households or
parts of social groups. In business, the
social pillar pertains to the
stakeholders such as employees and
consumers and the locality the business
operates in, thus it is also called as
people pillar. A business has to earn
support from all its stakeholders to be
sustainable. 05
ENVIRONMENTAL
PILLAR
The environmental pillar refers to the
environmental and natural resources .Also
known as planet pillar. Following the concept
of scarcity, natural resources have to be
utilized efficiently to satisfy the needs to the
present generation and sill have enough for
future ones. The globally growing call to
conserve and protect the environment in is line
with the goal of sustainable development.
05
ECONOMIC PILLAR
It is equally important companies
to earn profit as much as it is
critical for them to consider the
society and scars natural resources
in producing goods and services. It
is also called as profit pillar.

17 Sustainable
Development
Goals
#1 NO POVERTY
This first goal aims to eradicate poverty
in all its forms.

While the number of people living in

extreme poverty has dropped by more
than half between 1990-2015, there are
still about 659 million people living with a
lack a of certain commodities as of March
2023. This leaves many struggling to meet
basic human needs like food and clean
drinking water.
#2 ZERO
HUNGER
End hunger, achieve food security and improved
nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

“Zero Hunger” sets out to end hunger, achieve

food security, improve nutrition, and promote
sustainable agriculture. The global pandemic has
only worsened global hunger, seeing as many as
161 million additional people will experience
hunger as a result. Regarding women, 1/3 of those
at a reproductive age experience Anaemia due to
nutritional deficiencies.
#3 GOOD HEALTH
AND WELL-BEING
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all
ages.

This goal focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles and

providing modern, efficient healthcare for all, so that
preventable illnesses continue to decrease around the
globe.

To address this goal, the U.N. has specific targets that

cover all different aspects of healthcare. Targets to
achieve by 2030 include things like reducing maternal
mortality rates, ending preventable deaths in children
under five, fighting communicable diseases like AIDS,
tuberculosis and malaria, and supporting research and
development of affordable vaccines and medicines.
#4 QUALITY
EDUCATION
This goal ensures inclusive
and equitable quality education and
promotes lifelong learning for all.
In 2015, when the SDGs were established,
the primary school enrollment rate in
developing regions reached 91 percent, the
number of children out of school had been
cut in half and there were more girls in
school than ever before.
#5 GENDER
EQUALITY
Achieve gender quality and
empower all women and girls.

This SDG focuses on addressing

unequal labor rights, sexual
violence and exploitation, unequal
division of unpaid domestic care,
and discrimination in public office.
#6 CLEAN WATER
AND SANITATION
Ensure availability and sustainable management of
water and sanitation for all.

Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the

world, an alarming figure that is expected to rise
along with global temperatures.

This SDG cites reducing pollution and eliminating

hazardous chemical and raw sewage dumping as
necessary steps on the way to improving overall
water quality and access to drinking water. Working
cooperatively between countries to efficiently use
freshwater in a way to minimize scarcity
#7 AFFORDABLE
AND CLEAN ENERGY
Almost 800 million people lack access to
electricity. This puts into perspective why this
goal aims to ensure affordable, reliable,
sustainable, and modern energy.

Our current reliance on fossil fuels is

unsustainable and actively harmful to our
planet, and as the population grows, so too will
our energy needs. Climate change is one of the
biggest threats to our survival, but access to
energy is essential for all.
#8 DECENT WORK
AND ECONOMIC
GROWTH
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable
economic growth, full and productive
employment, and decent work for all.

In developing countries, the middle class made

up more than 34 percent of total employment
when the SDGs were written in 2015.
This goal aims for truly sustainable economic
growth by encouraging entrepreneurship and
job creation with policies focused on
technological innovation development.
#9 INDUSTRY,
INNOVATION AND
INFRASTRUCTURE
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive
and sustainable industrialization and foster
innovation

With over half the world population now living

in cities where mass transport and renewable
energy are becoming ever more important, as
are the growth of information and
communication technologies.
#10 REDUCED
INEQUALITIES
Reduce inequality within and among countries.

Over the past four decades, income inequality

has risen sharply due to global deregulation and
large transfers of public to private wealth in
nearly all countries. In 2016, the top one percent of
earners received 22 percent of global income,
while the bottom 50 percent received only 10
percent of global income.

This SDG focuses on global policies that empower

lower income earners and promote economic
inclusion of all, and focus specifically on lifting up
women and migrant workers.
#11 SUSTAINABLE
CITIES AND
COMMUNITIES
Make cities and human settlements
inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

By 2050, two thirds of humanity, or 6.5

billion people, are expected to live in an
urban environment. It is vital for the health
of the planet and success of our global
connectedness that the cities of the future
can function more sustainably than the
cities of 2023.
#12 RESPONSIBLE
CONSUMPTION AND
PRODUCTION
Ensure sustainable consumption and
production patterns.

The biggest factor in achieving this goal is

agriculture, which accounts for close to 70
percent of all freshwater for human use.
However, despite this huge footprint, nearly 1.3
billion tons of food go to waste each year,
while at the same time almost 2 billion people
go hungry or undernourished.
#13 CLIMATE
ACTION
Take urgent to combat climate change and its impacts.

It aims to reduce climate change and negative

environmental impacts.

This is perhaps the most wide-reaching SDG in that it

affects the entire world population and has significant
consequences if no action is taken. Every part of the
Earth is already experiencing the drastic effects of
climate change—the annual economic losses from
climate-related disasters already reach the hundreds of
billions of dollars, and climate-related geo-physical
events killed 1.3 million people between 1998 and 2017.
#14 LIFE BELOW
WATER
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas,
and marine resources for sustainable
development.

Healthy ocean ecosystems are essential to our

continued existence, and to counterbalance the
effects of climate change. Over three
billion people depend on marine and coastal
biodiversity for their livelihoods, yet the current
trends indicate 90 percent of the world’s fish
stocks are being overfished.
#15 LIFE ON LAND
Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of
terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable manage
forests, combat desertification, and halt and
reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity
loss.

Many of the targets for this goal look at forests,

which cover 30 percent of the Earth’s surface
and provide livelihoods to around 1.6 billion
people, all while playing a vital role in
combating climate change by providing clean
air and water. Each year we continue to lose
forests to desertification, disproportionately in
poorer communities.
#16 PEACE, JUSTICE AND
STRONG INSTITUTIONS
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for
sustainable development, provide to justice
for all, and build effective institutions at all
level.

The targets of this SDG aim to work with

governments and communities to end conflict
and insecurity. In addition, targets mention
reducing sexual violence, crime, exploitation,
and torture, which often run rampant in
regions of conflict.
#17 PARTNERSHIP FOR
THE GOALS
Strengthen the means of implementation and
revitalize the global partnership for sustainable
development.

Perhaps the biggest theme throughout the SDGs, and

an inherent part of accomplishing this goal, is
making a concerted effort to help developing
countries grow sustainably and in a way that
promotes safety and security for their citizens. This
also extends to promoting international trade and
increasing exports within developing countries.
