Here’s a list of common grammatical and vocabulary mistakes often made by advanced English

learners. These errors tend to be more subtle than those at lower levels but can still occur frequently.

Incorrect Use of “Recommend”
and “Suggest”
Incorrect: I recommend you to attend his
show.
Correct: I recommend you attend his show
or I recommend attending his show.
Pluralizing Uncountable Nouns
Incorrect: I found a research on the
subject.
Correct: I found research on the subject.
Incorrect: There are plenty of good
advices on that website.
Correct: There is plenty of good advice on
that website.
Incorrect Time Clauses
Incorrect: If I will go to the party, I will let
you know.
Correct: If I go to the party, I will let you
know.
Incorrect Word Order in Questions
Incorrect: I am not sure about how will this
country change in the next 30 years.
Correct: I am not sure about how this
country will change in the next 30 years.
False Friends and Cognates
Incorrect: He was sensible to criticism.
Correct: He was sensitive
Misuse of Say vs. Tell
Incorrect: She said me that she was late.
Correct: She told me that she was late.
Using Prepositions with Call/Answer
Incorrect: I had to call to the police/
You didn’t answer to my question.
Correct: I had to call the police/ You didn’t
answer my question.
Verb form after “Demand”
Incorrect: The people are demanding that
he stops the war.
Correct: The people are demanding that
he stop the war.
Using “to” after modal verbs
Incorrect: They should to start saving

Misusing certain phrasal verbs

Misusing “neither”

Using “overall” incorrectly

Infinitive about be/get used to
Incorrect: I am not used to speak in public.
Correct: I am not used to speaking in

Misspelling “especially”
Incorrect: I enjoy having picnics in the

day.

Being confused about “nor”
Incorrect: Neither I like online
meetings when being off work, nor
I want to be emailed by my boss on
the weekends.
Correct: I don’t like attending online

weekends.
Verb-subject agreement in “people”
Incorrect: People has the right to
express opinions without fear of
being punished.
Correct: People have the right to express
their opinion without fear of being
punished.
Confusing similar verbs
Incorrect: I was going to be extremely
busy, so I had to deny her invitation.
Correct: I was going to be extremely busy,
so I had to decline her invitation.
False Friends and Cognates:
compromise (1)
Incorrect: I was not sure that I could
compromise with the work involved,
so I quit the project.
Correct: I was not sure that I could commit
to the work involved, so I quit the project.
False Friends and Cognates:
compromise (2)
Incorrect: I compromised with my wife to
go on a cruise in the Mediterranean.
Correct: My wife insisted on going on a
cruise in the Mediterranean. As she was
really keen on the idea, I compromised.
