EXPERIMENT NO.

01
AIM:
To perform Polarity Test
T on single phase transformer
APPARATUS:
1. Single phase transformer (........................................)
2. Voltmeters (..................), (....................), (..................)
3. Autotransformer (....................)
4. Connecting wires
THEORY:
When a transformer (single phase or three phase) is connected with an ac
voltage, its terminals develop instantaneous polarities either positive or negative. For
parallel operations of transformers it is a must that terminals of the secondary side with
identical
ntical polarities can only be grouped together. If the secondary terminals with
opposite polarities are joined together then a local circuit among secondary windings
will be formed causing a condition of short circuits. Thus, before paralleling a bank of
transformers, the
he polarity test must be carried out.
Additive Polarity: In additive polarity, the voltmeter reads the voltage of summation of
primary and secondary voltages. The voltmeter reading is denoted as V3 and the
primary and secondary voltage is d denoted as V1 and V2 respectively. In additive
polarity, the voltmeter reads;
V3 = V1 + V2
The terminal ‘D ‘of the seecondary winding must be having the sam me instantaneous
polarity as the terminal ‘AA’ of the primary winding. The additivee polarity can be
marked as shown in the folllowing figure:

Subtractive Polarity: In subtractive polarity, the voltmeter reads the voltage of

subtraction of primary and secondary voltages. The voltmeter reading is denoted by V3
and it reads;
V3 = V1 – V2
The terminal ‘D ‘of the seccondary winding must be having the oppossite instantaneous
polarity as the terminal ‘A
A’ of the primary winding. The subtractiv
ve polarity can be
marked as shown in the folllowing figure:

PROCEDURE:
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the diagram.
2. Switch on the single phase A.C. supply.
3. Record the voltages V1, V2 and V3.
4. Switch off the A.C. supply.

PRECAUTIONS:
1. All connections should be tight.
2. The circuit should be according to circuit diagram.
3. The power should be on when the circuit is checked completely.
