COMPUTER LABORATORY
END OF TERM REPORT
TERM II 2024
By
Davis LUWAGA
SCHOOL COMPUTER LAB ATTENDANT

TO: THE HEADTEACHER.

INTRODUCTION
As the school’s computer lab technician, my primary responsibility is to ensure
that the computer lab operates efficiently for the benefit of both students and
staff. This report outlines the activities, challenges during Term 2, 2024 and
recommendations that can be implemented for the new term.
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES
Inventory Management/ Equipment Status: At the beginning of the term, the
computer lab had 6 desktop computers in good working condition. During the
term, one new desktop computer was purchased and added to the lab, increasing
the total number to seven. Additionally, one defective computer was successfully
repaired, bringing the total to eight fully functional desktop computers. This
improvement slightly eased access for students, though further upgrades are
recommended to meet the growing demands of the student body.
Maintenance of Equipment: Routine maintenance was carried out on all
computers, including cleaning and software installations and updates. Minor
repairs were conducted on some computers due to faulty peripherals.
Assistance to Students and Staff: Provided technical support during lessons,
assisting students in navigating computer software and troubleshooting minor
issues.
Teachers were also supported in setting up multimedia presentations and
managing class sessions that required the use of the computer lab.
Examinations. During the term, the lab was used for internal and external
examinations for the candidate classes. Despite many challenges the
examinations were successfully completed.
CHALLENGES
During the term, several challenges were encountered in the lab, which impacted
both regular operations and examinations for candidates.
 We faced a challenge of a limited number of computers. With only 8
computers available, the lab was insufficient to accommodate the number
of students, especially during the internal and external examinations. This
forced us to conduct ICT practical examinations in shifts with some sessions
extending into the night hours to ensure all students completed their
assessments. Many students also had to share computers during ICT
practical lessons which reduced individual hands-on learning opportunities.
 The computers in the lab are old with many systems not supporting the
latest software necessary for practical examinations and lessons.
 Additionally, there were some faulty hardware with some hardware
peripherals like mice and monitors malfunctioning since they have been
used for a longtime.
 The absence of an internet connection in the computer lab severely
restricted access to online educational resources, making it difficult for
students to conduct research. Teachers had to use their own money
sometimes to purchase data packets to access the internet. This added a
financial burden on the staff.
 The computer lab also lacks enough extension cables to allow connection of
other computer peripherals such as projectors which greatly hindered
different ICT practical lessons.
 The conduit on the wall was broken, exposing electrical wiring and posing a
potential safety hazard.
RECOMMENDATIONS
To address the challenges faced during the term and improve the overall
efficiency of the computer lab, I recommend the following actions:
 Expand Lab Capacity with Additional Computers: The lab currently
has 8 computers, which are insufficient to meet the needs of the
growing student population. Expanding the lab’s capacity by adding
more computers would reduce the need for students to work in
shifts or groups, thus improving individual access and learning
opportunities.
 Provide Internet Access for the Computer Lab: Internet access is
crucial for modern education and the new competence based O level
curriculum, allowing students to access online resources and conduct
research. Installing a reliable internet connection in the computer lab
would greatly enhance learning and ensure that the lab remains
relevant in a technology-driven environment.
 Upgrade Lab Furniture: The current furniture in the lab is old and
insufficient for the number of students using the facility. I
recommend upgrading the furniture to accommodate more students
comfortably and reduce overcrowding during classes and
examinations.
 Purchase of new peripheral devices such as mice, monitors,
keyboards to replace the old and defective ones.
 I recommend the broken wall conduit to be repaired to ensure the
safety of students in the computer lab.
CONCLUSION.
In summary, the computer lab played a vital role in supporting both regular
academic activities and examinations during the term. Despite the increase from
six to eight fully working desktop computers, several challenges significantly
impacted the efficiency of the lab. I urge the administration of the school to
follow up with the recommendations made.
I appreciate the continued support from the school administration and look
forward to working together to improve the computer lab in the new term.
