RANSOMWARE ATTACKS ON HEALTHCARE SECTOR

In November 2022, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi
experienced a major ransomware attack that disrupted its servers, forcing a temporary
shutdown of digital services. This incident locked patient data and health records, compelling
the hospital to operate with offline records for several days. Similarly, Narayana Health, one
of India’s largest private healthcare chains, faced a ransomware attack in 2021, which
encrypted sensitive patient data, including personal health information. In June 2021, Gandhi
Medical College in Bhopal suffered a significant disruption in hospital operations due to a
ransomware attack, with critical files being encrypted and ransom demanded for their
decryption. In recent years, private hospitals in Kolkata and other regions of India have also
been frequently targeted by ransomware attacks, causing substantial challenges as attackers
encrypt sensitive patient data and demand payments for release. Another notable incident
occurred in 2020 when Satyam Hospitals in Hyderabad was hit by a ransomware attack that
encrypted critical systems, accompanied by ransom demands.

In the United States, Universal Health Services (UHS), a major healthcare provider
with over 400 facilities, fell victim to a Ryuk ransomware attack in September 2020, severely
disrupting its IT systems and forcing hospitals to revert to manual processes. Similarly,
Riverside Healthcare in Illinois faced a ransomware attack in 2021, leading to the temporary
shutdown of several systems. In the United Kingdom, the Health and Social Care Trust in
Northern Ireland was targeted by a ransomware attack in 2020, causing the shutdown of
multiple IT systems. Australia also faced challenges when healthcare organizations in
Victoria were hit by ransomware attacks in 2021, affecting patient records and medical
services.

In Germany, the University Hospital Düsseldorf suffered a ransomware attack in

September 2020 due to a misconfigured server, leading to the shutdown of IT systems.
Another German hospital in Berlin faced a similar attack in the same year, disrupting medical
services and compromising patient data. In Canada, Alberta Health Services (AHS), one of
the largest health providers, was targeted by a ransomware attack in 2021, forcing the
temporary shutdown of systems and encrypting critical data. A medical organization in
Toronto also experienced a ransomware attack in 2020, impacting patient information
systems.
Russia-based threat actors were linked to the 2016 ransomware attack on MedStar
Health in the United States, where the ransomware known as "Samba" infected hospital
systems and disrupted operations. In Brazil, the Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo, one of
the country’s largest medical centers, was targeted by a ransomware attack in 2020, with
attackers demanding a ransom to decrypt critical medical data. South Africa's University of
KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), which runs healthcare-related programs, faced a ransomware attack
in 2021 that impacted its research and healthcare operations. These incidents highlight the
global vulnerability of healthcare institutions to ransomware attacks, emphasizing the need
for robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data and ensure uninterrupted
medical services.
