Introduction to
Web Based Learning
Introduction: The added value of web-based learning or with other
names such as online learning as part of blended learning compared
to teacher-centered learning is that of helping students to obtain the
right knowledge and skills so that they become active, independent
and collaborative learners [1]. Web-based learning resources have the
potential to support learning processes where students have the ability
to explore knowledge and improve their learning skills [2]. In
learning activities, determining the right learning material is an
important problem in an effort to help students achieve competence.
According to the Ministry of National Education [3] that in the
curriculum or syllabus, learning material is only written in broad
outline in the form of basic material. This condition is one of the
obstacles to learning activities.
Web Based Learning refers to the learning that take place by using the
internet as an instructional delivery tool to carry out a various learning activities
like downloading, copying the information from websites etc….
It uses the worldwide web or internet as a means and a method for delivery
for a learning and instructions.
Web based learning is often called online learning or e learning because it
includes online content discussion for forums via email, video conferencing and
video streaming or live lectures are all possible through the web. Web based
courses may also provide static pages such as printed course materials.
Definition:
Khan (1997) defines web-based instruction as
“ahypermedia -based instructional program which utilizes the
attributes and resource of the worldwide web to create a
meaningful learning is fostered and suppored”.

Web-based learning can be also formal or informal.

Formal web-based learning is purposed and learning
activities are organised by teachers. Informal learning takes
place while you are searching material from the Internet. It is
self-paced, depending on your goals and ambition to learn.
While e-learning refers to learning activities involving
computers and interactive networks, web based learning is
associated with learning materials delivered in a web browser.
One of the values of using the web to access course materials is that
web pages may contain hyperlinks to other parts of the web, thus
enabling access to a vast amount of web based information.
A “virtual” learning environment (VLE) or managed learning
environment (MLE) is an all in one teaching and learning software
package. A VLE typically combines functions such as discussion
boards, chat rooms, online assessment, tracking of students' use of the
web, and course administration. VLEs act as any other learning
environment in that they distribute information to learners. “Newer
technologies such as computers and video conferencing are not
necessarily better (or worse) for teaching or learning than older
technologies . . . they are just different . . . The choice of technology
should be driven by the needs of the learners and the context in which
we are working, not by its novelty.”

learning and understanding, as well as be adapted to individuals
with various learning styles.
• Individual characteristics such as physical disabilities remain
anonymous to other participants, thus eliminating judgments and
stigmas often associated with particular disabilities.
• Course information, Notice Board, Time table, Curriculum Map,
Syllabus,
• Communication via email and discussion Boards
• Formative Summative assessment.
• Teaching Materials Such as Slides, Handouts, Articles
• Links to useful internal and external websites for example Library
online data base and journals.
TYPES OF WEB BASED
LEARNING
1. On site web learning
This method is delivered to the learner in one specific place mainly in the form of the workplace,
schools and universities. Text materials, interactive tutorials, drills, simulations, games, tools and
open-ended learning environments/
