Read the following passage and answer the given subquestions:

The young man slumps against a lamp post.

A buzzing aura of insects around his face.

Some spiral down to their deaths, scorched by the heat of the lamp. Rasping, they fall on his chest,
arms and legs. He doesn’t throw them off. Or make an attempt to move away. He lies, staring at
the makeshift shop in front of him.

The shop: a broken cot with a board nailed to it. Small, fat mangoes heaped in a corner. Bottles of
sticky boiled sweets sitting uncertainly on the edge. From a distance, they look filled with colour.
Like a palm fan, the old cot-shop woman’s thin hand, laden with bangles, flaps this way and that,
trying to keep the flies away.

Peanuts heaped in a cone. He stares intently at them. A still mess of tiny worms, glistening in the
lamplight. He feels a mad desire. Brush that thin waving hand out of the way. Grab the peanuts
and run. But to do this, he must get up. He knows he cannot. His legs have gone to sleep. Heavy,
wooden.

He looks around him. Dead insects on both sides of his body. What if his body goes stiff forever?
He tries to swallow the thick gob of saliva pushing at the walls of his cheeks. It is an effort. In the
end, the saliva stays stuck to the roof of his mouth. He tightens his lips into a stitch.

A massive back cuts his line of vision and hides the cot-shop. He feels relieved, even thankful. He
closes his eyes.

His stomach, worn thin like a cotton rag, pulls into a spasm. His limbs feel like straw. He must find
something to eat. How long can this go on? But then, get up—and do what? Maybe he should
stretch out and go to sleep.

A hoarse, loud voice startles the evening, shattering its twilight calm. A song. From the film
showing in the theatre outside which he lies. The hairs on his forearms rise. His body jerks into
tremors. It’s a while before it dies down, accepting the blare that hits it.

Read the following article and answer the given subquestions.

Indigenous People May Have Created the Amazon’s ‘Dark Earth’ on Purpose

Indigenous people in the Amazon may have been deliberately creating fertile soil for farming for
thousands of years. At archaeological sites across the Amazon River basin, mysterious patches of
unusually fertile soil dot the landscape. Scientists have long debated the origin of this “dark earth,”
which is darker in color than surrounding soils and richer in carbon. Now, researchers have shown
that the indigenous Kuikuro people in southeastern Brazil intentionally create similar soil around
their villages. [Edit i] The finding, presented December 16 at the American Geophysical Union
meeting, adds evidence to the idea that the Amazonians deliberately manufactured such
soil long-ago. [Edit ii] In doing so, these early inhabitants may have inadvertently stored
massive quantities of carbon in the soil, says study presenter Taylor Perron, an earth
scientist at MIT. [Edit iii] The technique, he says, could provide a blueprint for developing
methods of sustainably locking atmospheric carbon in tropical soils, helping fight climate
change.

The Western world has long viewed the Amazon as a vast wilderness that was relatively untouched
before the Europeans showed up. At the center of this argument is the idea that the Amazon’s soil,
which is poor in nutrients, precluded its inhabitants from developing agriculture at a scale
required to support complex societies. But a slew of archeological finds in recent decades —
including the discovery of ancient urban centers in Amazonian areas of modern-day Bolivia — has
revealed that people were actively shaping the Amazon for thousands of years before the arrival
of the Europeans. Perron and his colleagues reviewed interviews of the Kuikuro people conducted
by a Kuikuro filmmaker in 2018. Those conversations revealed that the Kuikuro villagers actively
make dark earth — eegepe in Kuikuro — using ash, food scraps and controlled burns. “When you
plant where there is no eegepe, the soil is weak,” explained the elder Kanu Kuikuro in one of the
interviews. “That is why we throw the ash, manioc peelings and manioc pulp.” [Edit iv] The team
found “striking similarities” between dark earth samples from ancient and modern sites,
says Perron. Both were far less acidic than surrounding soils — probably thanks to the
neutralizing effect of ash — and contained higher levels of plant-friendly nutrients.

These analyses also revealed that dark earth holds twice the amount of carbon as surrounding
soils on average. The technique highlights how the ancient people were able to thrive in the
Amazon by developing sustainable farming that doubled as a carbon-sequestration technique.
With more and more greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere, making dark earth — or
something like it — could be a method of mitigating climate change while supporting agriculture
in the tropics. “People in the ancient past figured out a way to store lots of carbon for hundreds or
even thousands of years,” Perron says. “Maybe we can learn something from that.” Adapted from:
Kreier, Freda. “Indigenous People May Have Created the Amazon’s ‘Dark Earth’ on Purpose.”

Read the following passage and answer the given subquestions.

I had been puzzled too when I first discovered how much deference Robi commanded in college. It
was hard to understand, for he did not excel particularly in any of the spheres which were held to
confer distinction in that milieu: he was not unusually good at sports, just about good enough to
keep a place in the college cricket eleven; he was good at his studies but not brilliant; he was not
clever, not well dressed, not talented, nor in any way unlike a dozen others in our college, and yet,
without asking for it, barely seeming to notice, he commanded a respect immeasurably greater
than the best sportsmen and the most brilliant students.

It took me time to see that this respect was really a tribute to the superhuman simplicity of his
view of the world: to the fact that he had no hesitation in making judgements – because there
were whole domains of conduct within which he would not admit the possibility of argument – and
no fear of defending them, because of his abundant physical courage. Once, for example, there
was a great uproar in our college because a student had been expelled for some minor
misdemeanour – for asking a girl up to his room for a cup of tea or some such thing. The students’
union was unanimous in calling for a strike. But Robi, alone in the whole college, refused to go
along with everyone else: he didn’t argue or make speeches, he merely refused to attend the
union meetings. And when some of the union’s leaders threatened to give him a beating, they
found to their surprise that he was relieved at the prospect of settling the issue by a
straightforward physical contest. Such was his standing in the college that eventually the leaders
gave in and the strike was called off.
Later, I asked him: Why wouldn’t you join the strike? Tell me, just as a matter of interest.

He wouldn’t answer, so I asked him again, and then reluctantly he said: Because a rule’s a rule; if
you break one you have to be willing to pay the price.

Read the following exchange between an interviewer and an interviewee and answer the
given subquestions:

Candidate: Good afternoon, sir.

Interviewer 1: Good afternoon. Please take your seat.
Candidate: Thank you, sir. (Takes his seat in a calm and dignified manner, and smiles slightly and
respectfully at the interview panel. The candidate’s demeanour is welcoming and he appears as if
he is ready to communicate.)
Interviewer 1: _____
Candidate: I hail from Bishnoi district in Madhya Pradesh. I did my primary education at Aligarh
Muslim University City School. I moved to Noida and graduated in Electronics and Electrical
Engineering. Currently, I work as a project engineer in Tata Motors. I was also a part of the team
that developed the Tata Nano within record time and for minimum price.
Interviewer 2: What would you identify as your biggest weakness?
Candidate: Sir, I am very insistent on ensuring that my work is perfect. So I tend to spend a little
too much time going through the minutest aspects of my work to check whether my expectations
of quality have been met. I have found out through experience that working as a team and
delegating responsibilities where necessary can be extremely helpful in both balancing my own
idiosyncrasies and in producing output of the best quality.
Interviewer 1: What would you then identify as your greatest strength? Because you seem to think
of your biggest weakness as an enabling rather than a disabling quality.
Candidate: (Smiles) That is true, sir. I do indeed think of my weakness as a quality that can be
leveraged and managed to enable the best results. I am careful not to let perfectionism get the
better of me. My greatest strength, I believe, is my ability to meticulously organise my work. _____ I
can easily assume a bird’s eye view of the project at hand and focus on how resources may be
optimally utilised within a stipulated time frame to guide the project to a fruitful end. I can
therefore effectively analyse the constructibility of a product under design and execute the
product into being. An old quote I once heard spoke of execution as the three-dimensional
expression of meaning. In that sense, I would say that my greatest strength is my ability to
express three-dimensional meanings succinctly and effectively.
Interviewer 2: Very good. What can you tell us about your current job? _____
Candidate: I greatly enjoy working with the people in my current company. We share an easy
camaraderie and I also appreciate the fact that the management takes the effort to know their
employees well and to build personal connections with the employees. _____ I think of it as a
wonderful entry level opportunity for someone seeking a door of access into the corporate world,
and I have benefitted immensely from it, but I would like to explore avenues for further
advancement as I go ahead in my career. It is the conviction that your company will recognise my
capabilities and allow me opportunities for growth that motivated me to appear for this interview.
Interviewer 2: I see. _____ How can an engineer help tackle it?
Candidate: Sir, in my opinion, the most pressing issue facing our country at the moment is self-
sufficiency in food, or lack thereof. It is a problem that lies at the root of several other problems
like unemployment and the urban-rural income disparity. We, as a nation, are yet to find a way to
make our agricultural sector reap the full benefits of our industrial advancement. I think that an
engineer can play a pivotal role in harnessing scientific techniques to give a fillip to the agricultural
sector and thus, not only to improve the farmers’ quality of life, but also help the nation attain self-
sufficiency in food production. An engineer can provide a crucial connecting link between an
agriculturalist and an industrialist.
Interviewer 1: _____
Candidate: If I am selected, I shall have to serve a notice period of one month, and I will thereafter
be able to join your company with no further delay.
Interviewer 2: Thank you, Mr. Tabraz. That will be all for now. _____ Have a good day.
Candidate: Thank you. Wish you a good day ahead too. (Exits after righting the position of the
chair that he has vacated.)

Consider a logistic regression model trained to detect spam emails. Emails containing harmful
phishing links are labeled as spam (1), while regular emails are labeled as not spam (0).

A good spam detector should correctly identify almost all emails with phishing links. Even a single
phishing email incorrectly classified as not spam could expose users to significant risks. However,
the detector may classify some regular emails as spam. This trade-off is acceptable to ensure
safety.

To ensure user safety, if the threshold is set to a low value to prioritize the detection of phishing
emails, type 1. If the threshold is set to a high value to minimize false positives (misclassifying
regular emails as spam), type 0.

Milo’s Survey Services (MSS) specializes in evaluating the reaction of customers to new products. A
client has hired MSS to ascertain customer reaction to a recently launched product (Frying Pan).
During meeting with the client, MSS agreed to conduct door-to-door personal interviews to obtain
responses from households with children and without children. In addition, MSS agreed to
conduct both “Daytime” and “Evening time” interviews. Specifically, the client’s contract called for
MSS to conduct 1000 interviews under the following quota guidelines
i. Interview at least 400 households with children
ii. Interview at least 400 households without children
iii. The total number of households interviewed during evening must be at least as great as the
number of households interviewed during the day
iv. At least 40% of the interviews for households with children must be conducted during the
evening
v. At least 60% of the interviews for households without children must be conducted during
evening

Because the interviews for households with children take additional interview time and because
evening interviewers are paid more than daytime, the cost varies with type of interview. Based on
previous surveys conducted, MSS estimates the interview costs as given in Table-1

MSS wanted to conduct the interviews so that the overall cost for conducting the survey is
minimized. Given this information, answer the subquestions.
