Title:
● Measuring mass and force using spring
balance:

Objectives:
● To develop our lab working skill, meaning, as we are doing in the lab, we will have
the skill of doing experiments in the lab.
● to know how to measure mass using spring balance
● to know how to measure how to measure force by using spring balance

Theory:
There are laws and theories that are used to know the things about the force.for
example, Newton's second law of motion says acceleration is indirectly proportional to
mass and directly proportional to force, so the formula for force is going to be f = ma.

materials used:
● Spring balance In different amounts of measurement, meaning in different ability
of measurement, for example, there is a white color spring balance which has the
ability to measure up to 3000 gram and 30 newton , and the others have their
own ability to measure up to some point.
● metal, we used as a mass sample and the things that we used to measure with
spring balance.
● A stand with a cramp is the instrument that we used to catch the spring balance
instead of catching the spring with our hands, while we were measuring.
Procedures used while we are doing the experiment;
1), Firstly, we collected the materials that we needed to do the experiment, including
metals with different amounts of mass for example metal with 500 gram, 200 gram ,
100 Gram , 150 gram and 20 gram and spring balance which had different amounts of
measurement. For example, the spring balance that can measure until 3000 gram and
so on
2), Secondly, we measured mass and force of the metal
3), thirdly, we tried to measure with different types of spring balances
4), finally, we recorded the amount of mass and force of the metal what we
measured in different spring balance
● Data and observation
In this experiment, we noticed a lot of things that happened while we were measuring
the amounts of force and mass in different spring balances. We measured with four
types of spring balances, and we didn’t get the same amount of measurement in all
instruments.
The table below shows the measurement what we measured in different type of
spring balance;

spring balance white red brown green

Amount of 500 gram 499 gram 450 gram 480 gram

mass

Amount of 5N 5N 4.5N 4.8N

force

Amount of 200 gram 200 gram 160 gram 180 gram

mass

Amount of 1.99N 2.0N 1.7N 1.8N

force

Amount of 700 gram 680 gram 640 gram 700 gram

mass

Amount of 7N 7N 6.5 N 6.8N

mass

Amount of 99 gram 100 gram 50 gram 90 gram

force

Amount of 1N 0.9N 0.5N 0.9N

mass

Amount of 400 gram 380 gram 350 gram 380 gram

mass

Amount of 3.9N 3.8N 3.5N 3.9N

force

Amount of 250 gram 240 gram 200 gram 200 gram

mass

Amount of 2.4N 2.5N 2N 2N

force

So by using the formula of the force we are going to calculate the amount of the force
and compare with the true value;
f= mg
given. Required
M = 500g F=?
g = 9.8m/s^2
Solution;

F = mg
F = 500g*9.8m/s*2
= 0.5 kg*9.8
= 4.9 N
So, in this case, there is an instrumental or personal error, it is because we read it the
amount of the force for the mass of 500 grams was 5 newton, so, there is an
instrumental or personal error.

Data and analysis;

In this experiment, we noticed a lot of things with our data after we did our experiment
and recorded the measurement that we measured. For example, We noticed that there
was an amount of mass of the metal that is written beside the metal. But, while we were
measuring, we got different amounts of measurement. For instance, we saw the
amount of the mass of metal that we used to measure was 500 grams, but we got
different amounts of measurement, but also we noticed that there were different
amounts of measurement while we were measuring the amount of the mass and force
in different types of spring balances. So, in this experiment, there were a lot of things
that we learnt; for instance, we saw instrumental error, which is because we got
different amounts of measurement while measuring the mass and the force of metal.
Moreover, we also saw the precision and accuracy of the measurement because there
was a true value that was found on the side of the metal, and then we compared what
we measured in different spring balances and the true value. So, in this case, we
identified the spring balances based on their accuracy and precision, so, for example,
there were four types of spring balances, green, white, red, and brown, so they have
different amounts of measurement while measuring the metal. So we grouped them
with the accurate instrument and the precise instrument, so the brown spring balance
was more precise but not as accurate as we compared it to the true value because it
lost 50 grams of the metal every time, so it has precision. Moreover, the white spring
balance was more accurate as we compared it to the true value that is written on the
side of the metal.

So by using the formula of the force we are going to calculate the amount of the force
and compare with the true value;
f= mg
given. Required
M = 500g F=?
g = 9.8m/s^2
Solution;

F = mg
F = 500g*9.8m/s*2
= 0.5 kg*9.8
= 4.9 N
so, in this measurement as we can understand that, there is an instrumental or personal
error, since it doesn’t match with the measurement that we measured to the calculation
value.

conclusion;
in conclusion, in our experiment , we learnt a lot of things while we were doing the
experiment, for example, while we are measuring , there can be personal and
instrumental errors, so we understood that we should consider the errors that can
happen while are measuring something and this experiment can teach us a lot of things
and skills in the lab.
