The Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings —also known by its acronym in English: ECO
(Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings)— is a collection of books that systematically
address chess openings. The moves have been selected from millions of games between
masters and from analyses published in the Chess Informer since
1966https://www.wikiwand.com/es/1966https://www.wikiwand.com/es/Informador_aje
drec%C3%ADstico, compiled by notable chess players. Both the encyclopedia and the
chess informator are published by the Serbianhttps://www.wikiwand.com/es/Serbia
(formerly Yugoslavian) company Šahovski informator, based in Belgrade.
Instead of traditional opening names, the encyclopedia developed a system for encoding
openings, which has become a standard used by many other publications. There are 5
main categories (AE), each of which is divided into 100 subcategories.
