A Common Measurement System and Science Basics - By Diffit (Printable)

Scientists primarily use the metric system for measurements, which simplifies calculations due to its base-10 structure. Microscopes, including light and electron types, are essential tools for observing small objects, while safety protocols in laboratories are crucial for conducting experiments responsibly. Key laboratory techniques include cell cultures and cell fractionation, which aid in biological research.

A Common Measurement System and Science Basics

A Common Measurement System and Science Basics

A Common Measurement System: Scientists mostly use the metric system for measurements. It’s
easy because the metric system is based on multiples of 10. Here are some common metric units:
Length:

• 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) • 1 meter = 1000 millimeters (mm) • 1000 meters = 1
kilometer (km)

Mass: • 1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g) • 1 gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg)

• 1000 kilograms = 1 metric ton (t) Volume: • 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL)

• 1 liter = 1000 cubic centimeters (cm³) Temperature: • 0°C = freezing point of water

• 100°C = boiling point of water Microscopes: Microscopes help scientists look at tiny things that
we can’t see with just our eyes.

Light Microscopes: • Most commonly used. • They make things look bigger, up to 1000 times
bigger.

• They use light to pass through the object and have two lenses to form an image. Electron
Microscopes: • Used to see even smaller things.
• They use electrons instead of light. Laboratory Techniques: • Cell Cultures: Scientists can grow
groups of cells from one original cell.

• Cell Fractionation: This method is used to separate different parts of a cell. Safety in Science: •
Always follow safety rules. • Read and follow the instructions in your textbook. • If you’re unsure,
ask your teacher. • Wash your hands after doing any experiments.

Reading Summary
● Scientists use the metric system to measure things, and it's easy because it uses tens,
hundreds, and thousands.
● Microscopes help scientists see tiny things that are too small for our eyes, and there are two
types: light microscopes and electron microscopes.
● Scientists follow safety rules when they do experiments, like washing their hands and asking
their teacher if they have questions.
