PROCEDURE

1. SCOPE

This procedure refers to the traceability and color coding system applied during prefabrication and
erection activities on site, for the proper quality identification of piping bulk material and related weld
elements.

2. APPLICABILITY

Piping works related to sulfate removal facility project at Ain Dar / Abgig.

6. RESPONSIBILITY

6.1 QA/QC Manager


He shall be responsible to confirm whether work activities & documentation works are executed as
per the approved procedures & specifications.

6.2 QC Supervisor
It is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure that construction is in compliance with the
applicable Codes and Saudi Aramco Standards and Standard Drawings and Quality Supervisor (Crew
&QC Supervisors, Material Control Supervisors, etc.) are responsible for ensuring the requirements of
this Procedure are fully understood and followed by all persons that are responsible for its
implementation.

6.3 QC Inspector

He shall make sure all construction activities is in compliance with applicable Aramco standard and
drawing and all materials/equipment received on the store as per project requirement and are new and
free of damage and proper storage, handling and preservation should be followed.

PROCEDURE

7. PROCEDURE

7.1 General Requirements

Prior to prefabrication / erection activities and subsequent marking transfer, materials are checked
for conformance to material specifications, proper marking and color coding, identification and
specific requirements of the Project and that no material is going to be used without existing Mill
Certificates. In case of absence of the above mentioned traceability elements, these materials shall be
transferred and stored in an isolated area and further action shall be taken in order to retrieve the
required informationfrommaterialissuereports,orpackinglists,ormaterialcertificates.Ifthis information
can not be retrieved an NCR shall be is used and the materials shall be kept isolated.

A system for continuous control and traceability for pressure containing materials used in the
prefabrication and erection of piping assemblies is carried out on site as follows.

 The system include shall material designated for pressure parts and any attachment on them.

 Receivedmaterialsshallbeproperlycolorcodedinaccordancewiththeattached color code


(appendix A) and placed in the warehouse or temporary storage area. The color mark is
applied directly by brus hand or spray painting.

 The color marking obtained through painting shall be 30 mm wide for pipe ≥2inches and
13mm
For diameter less than 2 inches as per Appendix A.

 The color marking for pipes with diameter ≥4in.shall continue in the internal side of the pi-
Ping for at least 10 cm in order to avoid disappearance of the marking itself in case of sand-
blasting as per Appendix-A Table 1.

 The object of using color coding and marking is to ensure the identification of piping bulk
materials and also facilitate the material handling at construction site as temporary measure as

per Appendix-A Table 1. The color coding and marking shall be clearly indicated and shall not

be easily erasable. The quality of paint/ ink shall have a life of not less than one year in un-

heated storage under cover without loss of any definition. Paint/ ink shall be resistant to salt

water atmosphere, tropical climate or similar attack, and be durable and of a distinctive
identifying color. They shall not cause corrosion of the materials to which it is applied through
stage, construction and operation. Paint/ ink containing sulfur, lead, or other harmful

substances are not acceptable Paint/ink containing zinc are not acceptable for stainless steel
materials. There shall be no chemical or physical reaction between the marking material and
any protective coating used.

Color coding or marking shall not be applied to:

 Interior of pipe (Note-1), flanges, fittings or similar items


 Welding Seams
 Weld Bevels
 Threads
 Other coding or markings
 Gasket contact surfaces

Note-1:

API 5L SAW pipes shall have markings on the outside surface of the pipe except that the white
longitudinal stripe shall be marked on the inside surface of pipe,whenPara.11.1.5 of01-SAMSS-
035 is applicable.

7.2. Color Coding

7.2.1General Requirements

The color coding shall be performed after the application of surface rust prevention as required in
the relevant specification.

7.2.2 Colors

The colors shall be selected from the British Standard 381-C “Colors for Specific Purposes”, RAL colors
or Munsell colors.

7.2.3 Surface Preparation

Surfaces to be color coded shall be cleaned and free of dirt, loose scale, oil, or grease.

7.2.4 Pipe (including Straight Nipples).


Each length of pipe shall be color coded over the entire length.

PROCEDURE

Each blind flange shall be color coded longitudinally on the rim.

7.2.8 Bolt sets (one stud bolt with two nuts or one machine bolt with nut)

One of the heads (opposite side of the stamped head) of stud bolts and both nuts or machine

Bolt head and one nut shall be color coded as per Appendix-A Table 3.

7.2.9 Spiral Wound Gaskets

Spiral wound gaskets shall be color coded in accordance with ASME B16.20 (Winding and

Inner ring materials) as per Appendix-A Table 2.

7.2.10 Sheet Gaskets

Each sheet gasket shall be color coded on the outside edge as per Appendix-A Table 2.

7.2.11 Insulation Gaskets & Kits

Each insulation gaskets & sleeves shall be color coded on the outside edge as per Appendix- A
Table 2.

7.2.12 Pre-commissioning materials color identification

All pre-commissioning materials provided by construction subcontractor shall be differently

color coded at site as per Appendix-A.

7.3 Transfer of Markings

7.3.1 General Requirements

The requirements of marking and its methods shall be in accordance with the individual
applicable codes, standards, specifications, and the related SAMSS’s. MSS-SP25 is a mandatory
requirement to Valves, Fittings, Flanges and Unions. If there is a conflict between this

specification and the related SAMSS’s, Vendor shall inform to purchaser for resolution.

7.3.2 Marking shall not be easily erasable, and shall be clearly indicated. The method shall be either

Low-stress stamping, dot-stamping, stenciling, forged-out, or cast-in molding as per applicable

code, standard, and requisition; with the following limitation:

- Low-stress stamping shall be round nosed with a radius of 0.25 mm minimum.

PROCEDURE

As perS-001-1360-002 (Identification of Piping Materials)If it is physically impossible to apply the


specified marking method such as Traceability Color Coding and Marking Transfer Procedure
Rev. 0, Stenciling, etc. because of limited room, durable and securely affixed stainless steel tag
plate with stainless steel wire is acceptable subject to purchaser’s approval. Galvanized or other
plated wire is not acceptable to prevent contamination in any case.

7.3.3 The minimum wall thickness shall be maintained after any marking.

7.3.4 The following information shall be marked, as a minimum, except as supplemented in Para.5.2
thru 5.6 as per S-001-1360-002 (Identification of Piping Materials)

 Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) (Note-1)


 Wall Thickness (Identification, e.g., “STD”), schedule number or Specified Thickness (Note-2)
 Pressure Class Rating (Note-3)
 Material Designation such as ASTM A106-B
 Manufacturer’s Name or Trademark
 Manufacturing Number, Charge Number, or Heat Number
 Others (Other requirements in the related SAMSS’s, if any)

Note-1: For API5L pipes, “NPS” shall apply, but not “Size” in inches.

Note-2: Wall thickness indication on documents, tags, and products shall be same as those written in
purchase orders.

For example:

 If “NPS2 Sch40” is written in a purchase order, the thickness indication shall be


“Sch40”. “STD” instead of “Sch40” is not acceptable even though the
thickness value is equal.

 If “12.7mm” is written in a purchase order, the thickness indication shall


be“12.7mm”.“0.5inch” instead of “12.7mm” is not acceptable even though the
thickness value is equal.

Note-3: “Class (e.g. ASME Class 150)” shall apply, but not “PN” or other pressure rating designation,

unless specified in Purchaser’s Commodity Description.

7.3.5 Traceability of ID Code and Heat Number, as well as color coding markings shall be
maintained during each stage of processing warehouse sand blasting pre-fabrication

PROCEDURE

- (Identification of Piping Materials) shall be responsible for:

 Maintaining the color and letter marking on the items. Immediate restoration is required
in case of erasing them during hot operations (grinding, PWHT) or sand blasting
application. In order to not lose the marks the transfer marking (ID and Heat No) should be
done whenever it is possible by writing this information in the internal side of the pipes,
with permanent marker. For small bore piping these elements should be written at each
end of the pipe and protected with an adhesive and sand blast resistant tape. For fittings
metal sheet labels shall be fastened with wire, in case the trace ability elements are not
hard stamped.

 Traceable identification is carried out during pre-fabrication& erection by hand written or


stamping of the relevant heat number and ID Code one a shipping spool and component.

 The method of marking shall be such to avoid contamination, superficial discontinuity,


And change in the structure or geometric shape of the component. Pipes having a
Thickness ≥6 mm may be hard stamped; for thickness less than 6mm it is better to paint.

 The mark number, otherwise only blunt-nosed interrupted dot die stamp shall be used.
Minimum distance from any welding of the hard stamp or the blunt-nosed dot die
stamps shall be minimum150mm.

 Each spools in fabrication shop should be identified by metal sheet labels and shall be
fastened with wire giving identification of spools with isometric line no., sheet no. and
heat no.; heat no. isometric line no.

 Works Contractor shall keep track of the ID Codes and Heat numbers used for spools
fabrication on his data base which shall be available for PMT whenever required.

7.4 Flanges (Including Orifice Flanges)

Purchaser’s Indent Code (e.g. P61K-001WW) shall be marked on the rim of the flanges by stamping

in addition to Para.5.1.4 of this specification. Marking of all flanges (i.e. welding-neck, socket-
welding, threaded, blind flanges and orifice flanges) shall be in accordance with Para.12 of 02-

SAMSS-011 (Forged Steel & Alloy Flanges).

7.5 Valves

All valves shall have stainless steel tag plate securely attached directly on the body and / or hand
wheel. Purchaser’s Indent Code (e.g. P81K-000E8) shall be indicated on the tag plate by stamping.

Tag plates not attached directly on body, e.g. using stainless steel wire/ chain, are not acceptable

unless approved by Purchaser. Marking of all valves shall be in accordance with Para.11of 04-
SAMSS-035 (General Requirement of Valves).

7.6 Forged Steel Fittings

- Welding outlets (weld lets) are identified using branch size, run size, branch wall thickness, and run

wall thickness in purchase orders. Socket-welding Outlets (sock lets), Nipple-welding outlets
(nippolets) and Threaded outlets (thread lets) are identified using branch size, run size, and pressure
class rating in purchase orders. Run pipe size range is not shown in purchase orders for socket-
welding outlets, nipple-welding outlets and threaded outlets as per 02-SAMSS-011 (Forged Steel &
Alloy Flanges).

-Vendor shall categorize each outlet (Weldolet, Sockolet, Nippolets and Threadolet) into this
standard range, or tailor made, if necessary. Vendor standard range of welding outlets shall have
branch size, run size range, branch wall thickness, and run wall thickness. Vendor standard range of
socket-welding outlets, nipple-welding outlets and threaded outlets shall have branch size, run size
range, and pressure class rating.

7.6.1 Size and Wall Thickness Marking on Welding Outlets NPS2 and larger welding outlets shall have
double marking on products.

- For example, if"2 x 14 sch40 x sch20" is specified in a purchase order, then the products shall have
double marking "2 x14-36 STD/ STD (2 x 14 sch40 xsch20)",i.e. vendor’s standard marking like"2 x14-
36 STD/ STD" plus those specified in the purchase order. The vendor standard marking shall have size
range so that inter change ability at construction site can bemaintained.NPS1-1/2 and smaller
welding outlets shall have vendor standard marking like"3/4 x14-36 XS/ STD" only. However, a
stainless steel tag shall be tied to each welding outlet with stainless steel wire. The tag tied to each
welding outlet shall have branch size, run size, branch wall thickness, and run wall thickness
identified by purchase orders, as a minimum.

- Galvanized or other plated wire is not acceptable to prevent contamination. All bags shall have a
label reporting branch size, run size, branch wall thickness, and run wall thickness Identified by

purchase orders plus item number, Purchaser’s Indent Code, or any other code Mentioned in
purchase orders. If a welding outlet does not fall into any of vendor standard range, then vendor

proceeds with a "tailor made" product with marking as per purchase order. This is common for all
sizes as per 02-SAMSS-011. (Forged Steel & Alloy Flanges).

7.6.2 Size and Pressure Class Rating Marking on Socket-welding Outlets, Nipple-welding

PROCEDURE

Outlets and Threaded Outlets, All sizes of socket-welding outlets, nipple-welding outlets and
threaded outlets shall have vendor standard marking only, e.g. "1 x 6-36 CL3000".Tags in the
bag are not required.

7.6.3 Nipples

Nipples including swaged nipples shall have marking of material, size, wall thickness, length

as a minimum.

7.7 Spiral Wound Gaskets

Spiral wound gaskets shall have marking in accordance with ASME B16.20, with the following
supplements to ASME B16.20 Table 19.Winding Material Identification316 SS S 316.

7.8 RTR Pipes and Piping Components

Marking of all RTR pipes and piping components shall be in accordance with

Para.13 of 01-SAMSS-029RTR (fiber glass) Sewer Pipe & Fitting for Gravity flow,

Para.12 of 01-SAMSS-034RTR (fiber glass) Pressure Pipe & Fitting and

Para 5.9 of01-SAMSS-042 RTR Pipe & Fitting in Water & Hydrocarbon Service)

7.9 Traceability of Welded Joint

Work contractor is responsible for maintaining traceability of the welded joints. The pipe fitter after
identifying the weld number through the relevant Isometric, he shall mark it next to the bevel, in
such a way that it will not burn from the heat developed during welding. Welders shall mark (by
stamp or marker) their identification stamp close to the finished joint. In case that more than one
welder is involved, then a scheme shall be marked on the pipe for each side and each layer of the
corresponding welders: e.g.

- Field Weld "F" and Shop Weld "S" follow Welding Control & Identification Procedure and Welding
Repair Procedure weld identification /numbering should be consecutive in the direction of flow per
