Practical 9- 4- bit magnitude comparator

Aim:- Study and realise 4- bit magnitude comparator.

Toolkit Used:-

1) Digital Trainer Kit with +5V input power supply.

2) DB34 4-bit Magnitude Comparator digital kit.
3) +5V DC Power Supply Adapter.
4) Patch cords.

Theory:- Four Bit 7485 Magnitude Comparator: The Magnitude comparator is used to
compare binary and natural BCD coded. These IC’s can be cascaded to compare words of
greater lengths without external gates. The condition A > B, A = B, A < B output stage
handling LSB’s are connected to corresponding A > B, A = B, A < B cascading inputs of the
next stage handling MSB’s

Logic Diagram:

Truth Table:-

Data Inputs Cascading inputs Outputs

A = A3 A2 A1 A0 A>B A=B A<B A>B A=B A<B
B = B3 B2 B1 B0
A>B 0 1 0 1 0 0
A<B 0 1 0 0 0 1
A=B 0 1 0 0 1 0
Connections:-
HVPM COET
1. Connections are made as shown in the circuit diagram using the pin details of the gates.
2. Connect +5V to Vcc and GND to respective pins as shown in diagram below.
3. Switch on the Trainer.
4. Toggle Input switches A0, A1, A2, also B0, B1, B2 & B3 respectively.
5. Output LED’s will glow based on the comparison on inputs given.
6. Verify the truth table of the comparator.
