PROJECT ON FAMILY COUNSELING CENTRE

INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT OVERVIEW

The purpose of Family Counseling is to enable women in distress, due to marital

discord or abuse, to become aware of their situation and about the alternatives
available to them so that they can lead a well-functioning and self-reliant life with
self respect and dignity. “Ashoka Ngo Consultancy”, also provides legal assistance
to women and offers protection, support and shelter, if needed.

Family are developing fast and going through many rapid changes. They may be
coping with changes in their families, schools, or neighborhoods as well. Many
times they are not able to communicate well about the things that bother them to
the people that love them. They become anxious, angry, or misbehave. The mental
health needs of Family and adolescents are often discussed, but, at present, the
resource to support these needs is woefully inadequate.

We will provide quality counseling services to Family underprivileged. Counseling

will help the Family to identify their hidden talent and also provides psychological,
emotional and mental support to cope up with their daily personal problems.

PROJECT BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM STATEMENT

About 80% of Family and adolescents of the world live in developing countries
and Family below 18 years form a substantial part of the population in these
countries, there is an urgent need to develop mental health resources in developing
countries.

Further, there is an increased understanding that Family who are not mentally
healthy can have an adverse impact on the stability and economic viability of
nations. Of particular importance throughout the world is the fact that positive
mental health plays a role in supporting compliance and adherence to a broad
spectrum of health regimens.

The magnitude of mental health problems in Family has not yet been recognized
sufficiently. It is a paradox that in the second half of the 20th century, indicators of
social wealth and physical health amongst Family worldwide have improved, while
mental health services in young people have been deteriorating. The bulk of the
evidence suggests that one Family or adolescent out of eight does suffer from
mental health problems at any given point in time. It is also a paradox that very
few of these Family access mental health services in order to relieve the problems
at a time when Family psychiatry has developed new treatment approaches with
demonstrated efficacy.

Family too feels unhappy, anxious, fearful, and angry. They may lack
concentration, be forgetful, impulsive, have difficulty in controlling anger, and
fight. They may have difficulty in getting their mind off certain thoughts; may
suffer unexplained headaches, stomachaches, anorexia, or insomnia; may have
trouble in maintaining friendships or dealing with people; and may feel like hurting
themselves or others. These are not uncommon scenarios. They all indicate that all
is not well with this Family and should be taken seriously. On many occasions
these reflect Family’s reaction to his/her circumstances of life or his phase of
development. In fact, most parents, teachers and other adults are not sensitive to
pick up these subtle forms of behavioral indications and often ignore or neglect
them. It is only when the problem becomes severe and disabling that some
attention is paid to the Family. In early stages it is much easier and simpler to
intervene and push the developmental trajectories into a healthier and adaptive
course.
Family may suffer from a wide range of psychiatric illnesses such as conduct
disorders, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder adjustment
disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, mood disorders, substance abuse
and dependence. Suicide is relatively rare in Family, but its incidence rises rapidly
in adolescence.

Family living under conditions of perpetual stress and trauma; exposed to natural
and man made disasters; and experiencing breakdown of societal and family
structures are tremendously affected in their ability to live a healthy, happy and
productive life. Emotional and behavioral disorders, substance abuse,
psychosomatic conditions are an aftermath of their deprived or traumatized lives. If
left untreated, these psychiatric disorders seriously impair the Family’s ability to
function optimally in emotional, behavioral and cognitive domains and to meet the
demands of everyday life, have friendship or to contribute meaningfully to society.
India has given attention to mental health needs of Family of by promulgating from
time to time general health and education policies for proper psychological,
physical and social development of the Family to reduce the incidence of school
drop outs, mortality, morbidity and malnutrition.

Despite these efforts, from a national perspective it can be stated that the Family
mental health services have not been spread out uniformly are still woefully
inadequate.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

PROJECT GOAL

Psychosocial counseling and training are core mandates of “Ashoka Ngo

Consultancy” - Family Counseling Centre. Counseling is the process of helping
people to realize the potentials in them to solve their problems. It is important for
“Ashoka Ngo Consultancy” to seek the welfare of Family and make them
understand that they are heard, taken serious and most importantly are believed.

The main goal in this area is to create a confidential and safe platform for Family
to air their feelings and experiences with a counselor who is equipped with the
knowledge and skills in helping Family to cope with their situation, through
individual counseling, group counseling, play therapy, hypnotherapy,
psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga meditation etc.... Through the
participation in supportive counseling and groups, survivors will realize they are
not alone in their struggle against family violence and are able to learn new
strategies for taking control over their lives.

OBJECTIVES

 To help / guide / counsel women in physical and emotional distress or need,

through legal, economic, medical and emotional support and through
guidance and counseling so that they become self-reliant.

 To create awareness among women in particular and the society in general,

about family life and relationships, the situation of women in the family and
society, the rights and the identity of women.
 To work with Family who are in need of care and protection and ensure their
survival, well-being and development.
 To provide gender specific services to the women through financial
assistance, counseling and vocational guidance and training and for creation
of awareness of their rights and responsibilities.

VISION
“Ashoka Ngo Consultancy” seeks to help and empower women in distress and
achieve healthy development of under-privileged Family through education,
guidance, training and counseling to ensure a reasonable quality of life for
families.
MISSION
"To provide services to women and Family to ensure protection of rights, leading
to self reliance and empowerment for a dignified life."

OUR BROAD OBJECTIVES ARE:

 To increase opportunities that will create a forum for sharing ideas,

experience and learning among community members (Family, parents,
teachers and other stakeholders).
 To provide services and referral systems for psychological counseling
support and services for victims and their parents.
 To support orphaned and vulnerable Family who are in need of assistance.
Ultimately we support these Family to allow holistic development;
physically, emotionally and socially.
 To provide training in counseling to community volunteers, peer counselors
and teachers.
Specifically, we will:

We offer counseling for families in a private, comfortable setting so that Family

can deal with their issues, thrive, and grow to their potential. Depending on the age
of the Family, we may use talk therapy, play therapy, family therapy, or a mixture
of interventions. We do not expect Family to do therapy like an adult.
1. Listen to Family and young people, help them say what they want to say and
help get adults to listen.
2. Give information & advice about what Family and young people are entitled to,
and how they should be treated.
3. Support Family & young people if they want to have a decision reviewed or
complain about things they believe are wrong.

ACTIVITIES

Counselling services aim to help those suffering from psychological issues,

anxiety, and behavioural difficulties arising from relationship problems, addictions,
and bereavement and lifestyle pressures.

Counselling provides individuals with opportunities to explore and work towards

living in a more satisfying way. People may find themselves unable to cope with
certain situations or to adapt their mode of life to changed circumstances. As such,
counselling is especially helpful in times of crisis or change, such as severe or
traumatic accident, bereavement, life-threatening illness, loss of employment or
home, marital difficulty or other broken relationships which disrupt the previous
pattern of life.
Counselling helpline services are also available to provide a listening ear to anyone
who needs to talk about their concerns. Information and referral are also available
for those with specific needs.

The Family Violence Prevention and Intervention Programme aims to help victims,
perpetrators and witnesses of family violence. It also aims to create greater
awareness in the community about issues on family violence through public
education and outreach. The programme involves services ranging from remedial
services to preventive and developmental programmes. These include casework
and counselling, group work, and workshops.

Envision Counselling and Support Centre is pleased to announce our new Family
Intervention Program (FIP) that will provide immediate support and crisis
counselling (individual, couple or family) to families experiencing a single or
recurrent problem that is overwhelming or traumatic. The goal of the program is to
strengthen the family unit by empowering the members to improve the quality of
their personal and family lives. Counselling and support will be flexible and will
work towards increasing the positive involvement and healthy interaction between
parents/children and couples. The new program has offices in Estevan, Weyburn
and will be opening in Carlyle in the spring and will serve the surrounding rural
areas.

Crisis counselling allows individuals and families to face the emotional pain of the
crisis and move forward in healthy ways to cope with the stressful situation.

There are many situations that can lead to a crisis such as: high risk child or
adolescent behaviours, marital/couple relationship breakdown, blending families,
separation and divorce, or other traumatic events of situations. When a crisis
occurs within a family it can cause confusion, frustration, change of behaviour of
individual family members and feelings of hopelessness that can lead to family
breakdown. Envision counsellors believe that it can also be an opportunity to
explore family dynamics by focusing on strengths and abilities. By building on
these, families can feel more connected and improve overall family function.

The Family Intervention Program is not to replace any existing programs in the
southeast, but rather to provide immediate assessment and support for the family
and connect them to long-term supports when necessary.

Parenting and counseling services: to teach basic parenting skills, including, but
not limited to establishing realistic parental expectations. These services may
include home management, nutrition, health and consumer education provided
through public and private social service programs.

Assessment/Resource/Referral services: to gather information relevant to Family

case situation, complete case plan based on those needs and provide resource to
family or referrals services to appropriate agency that will meet those needs.

Domestic Violence and abuse counseling: to protect Family and Women who are
at risk and to reduce the recurrence of Family abuse neglect.

to victims of sexual abuse.
