FUNCTIONS AND RELATIONS
4-5) Which of the following relations are functions?

f = {(1,2) , (2,3) , (3,4) , (4,5)}

g ={(1,2) , (1,3) , (2,4) , (2,5) , (3,6)}

h = {(1,2), (3,6), (5,10), (7, 14)}

6. ) Graph of function or not?

NOT a FUNCTION
Evaluating a Function
7. f(x) = -x + 5 for x= -2

Solution:
f(x) = -x + 5
f(-2) = -(-2) + 5
f(-2) = 2 + 5
f(-2) = 7

8. f(x) = 3x2 + 5x +1 ; x = 5
Solution:
2
f(5) = 3x + 5x +1
2
= 3(5)+ 5(5) +1
= 3(25)+ 5(5) +1
= 75 + 25 +1
f(5) = 101
Evaluating a Function
9. ) 2x2 - 3x + 6 ; x= -5
Solution:
f(x) = 2x2 - 3x + 6
= 2(-5)2 - 3(-5) + 6
= 2(25) - 3(-5) + 6
= 128 - 3(-5) + 6
= 128 - (-15) + 6
= 143 + 6
f(-5) = 149
10.) Heleina wanted to rent a bicycle at a park. The
rental costs 150 pesos for the first 3 hours. After 3
hours, there is an additional 50 pesos for every hour.
How much would it cost Heleina if she will rent a
bicycle for 5 hours?

Solution:
f(x) = 150 + 50x
f(2) = 150 + 50(2)
= 150 + 100
f(2) = ₱250
It will cost 250 pesos for Heleina to
rent a bicycle for 5 hours.
Evaluating a Function
11-12.) Faye wants to buy books from an online store.
The cost of each fictional book is ₱650, but there’s a
flat shipping fee of ₱100.
The function to be used for this problem would be:
f(x) = ₱650x + ₱100

How much would be the total cost if Faye will buy 4

books?
f(x) = ₱650x + ₱100
f(4) = ₱650(4)+ ₱100
= ₱650(4)+ ₱100
= ₱2600+ ₱100
f(4)= ₱2700

How much would be the total cost if Faye will buy 10

books?
Solution:
f(x) = ₱650x + ₱100
f(10) = ₱650(10)+ ₱100
= ₱6500 + ₱100
f(10) = ₱6600
