This document outlines the homework assignments for ME 622A: Introduction to Continuum Mechanics, due on January 28th. The problems cover various topics in continuum mechanics, including properties of linear transformations, tensor decomposition, and vector calculus identities. Students are required to demonstrate specific mathematical relationships and properties related to tensors and vector fields.

ME 622A: Introduction to Continuum Mechanics

HW 1 (due on 28th January, in class)

1. Let A, B ∈ Lin such that B = I + A. Show that: (a) I1 (B) = 3 + I1 (A), (b) I2 (B) =
3 + 2I1 (A) + I2 (A), and (c) I3 (B) = 1 + I1 (A) + I2 (A) + I3 (A).

2. Let F ∈ Lin be invertible and let a, b ∈ V . Show that: (a) det(F + a ⊗ b) = det F (1 + F −1 a · b)
∗ −1 −1
and (b) (F +a⊗b)∗ = F (1 + F a · b)I − b ⊗ F a . It follows, as a consequence of the second

result, that (F + a ⊗ b)∗ b = F ∗ b.

3. (a) If Ω ∈ Skw with axial vector ω then show that Ω∗ = ω ⊗ ω.

T
(b) For A ∈ Lin show that A∗ = A2 − (tr A)A + 12 (tr2 A − tr A2 )I . Note that A is not
necessarily invertible.
(c) For A, B ∈ Lin show that (AB)∗ = A∗ B ∗ .

4. (a) Any tensor A ∈ Lin can be uniquely decomposed into a symmetric and a skew-symmetric
tensor. Show that Sym and Skw are vector spaces and that they are orthogonal in the sense that
S · W = 0 for every S ∈ Sym and W ∈ Skw. (please convince yourself regarding the uniqueness of
the decomposition)
(b) Show that any tensor A ∈ Lin can be uniquely decomposed as A = Ad + αI with tr Ad = 0
and 3α = tr A. This decomposition decomposes a tensor in a so-called deviatoric (traceless) and
a spherical tensor. Show that the spaces of deviatoric and spherical tensors are orthogonal vector
spaces.

5. (a) Let A ∈ Lin. Show that Ii (QAQT ) = Ii (A) for all Q ∈ Orth, where i = 1, 2, 3.
(b) Suppose U and C are symmetric, positive-definite tensors such that U 2 = C. Show that: (i)
I1 (C) = I12 (U ) − 2I2 (U ), (ii) I2 (C) = I22 (U ) − 2I1 (U )I3 (U ), and (iii) I3 (C) = I32 (U ).

6. Let u ∈ V be a twice-differentiable vector field over Ω ⊂ E3 . If E = (1/2)(∇u + ∇uT ) then

show that Curl Curl E = 0.

7. For u, v ∈ V , show that: (i) div(u×v) = v ·curl u−u·curl v, (ii) div(u⊗v) = (div v)u+(∇u)v,
(iii) curl(u × v) = div(u ⊗ v − v ⊗ u), and (iv) curl(u ⊗ v) = ((∇u)V )T + (curl v) ⊗ u, where
V ∈ Skw is the skew tensor with axial vector v.
