TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF COURSE CONTENT (See last pages.)

1
MODERN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT POLICIES

1. Attendance and Participation Policy:

• Class attendance and participation are necessary components of language learning.
• Students are required to arrive on time and to stay for the duration of the class.
• Students are expected to come to class prepared and to participate actively.
• Any student who misses more than 5 classes risks failure in the course.
• Students should refer to the ISEP (Section IV-C) regarding attendance.
• If a student is attending an intensive course, the student must inform the teacher, within the first two (2) weeks of
class, of the specific dates of any anticipated absences.

2. Homework and assignments must be completed by the due date. They are expected to be neat and legible. Late
submission of work will be penalized between 5% and 20% per calendar day up to a maximum of 7 calendar days, after
which the work will receive a grade of 0%. No work will be accepted after it has been returned to the class.
3. If a student is absent, it is the student’s obligation to inquire about what he/she has missed by contacting the teacher
or a classmate, and to submit homework.

4. All tests and quizzes are obligatory. There will be no make-ups. During tests and exams, students who leave the
classroom will not be permitted to re-enter. All electronic devices are strictly prohibited.

5. Student conduct
Everyone has the right to a safe and non-violent environment. Students are obliged to conduct themselves as stated in the
Student Code of Conduct and in the ISEP section on the roles and responsibilities of students (ISEP Section II-D). During
class time, electronic devices may only be used at the discretion of the instructor.
6. Academic Integrity Policy:
Cheating and plagiarism are considered serious academic offenses. Any act of cheating or plagiarism will result in an
automatic grade of ‘0’ (zero) or ‘F’ (failure) for the test, project or assignment in question and possibly, failure in the course.
It is the students’ responsibility, moreover, to ensure that the other students do not make unauthorized use of their
work. Having another person compose an oral or written assignment (or part of an assignment) is considered cheating in a
language class. If a student is found guilty of cheating or plagiarism, the College will be notified. Further disciplinary action
may be taken; this may include either suspension or expulsion from the College. According to ISEP, the teacher is required
to report to the Sector Dean all cases of cheating and plagiarism affecting a student’s grade (ISEP Section V-A).
7. Literacy Standards:
The very nature of our department of Modern Languages dictates that emphasis, in the classroom, be placed on both
communicative and grammatical competence. When submitting researched work, students are expected to adhere to
college-level standards of literacy and presentation. A standard academic documentation style such as the MLA Style sheet
must be observed.

8. Observance of Religious Holidays:

Students observing religious holidays must inform their teachers, in writing, as prescribed in the ISEP Policy on Religious
Observances, no later than the end of the second week of the impacted semester or term. This applies both to the semester
or term, as well as to any final examination period. If applicable, a statement indicating any modifications to planned course
activities resulting from the teacher’s own religious observances must be included as per ISEP Policy on Religious
Observances (ISEP Section IV-D).
9. ISEP Statement: The ISEP is designed to promote equitable and effective evaluation of student learning and is
therefore a crucial policy to read and understand. The policy describes the rights and obligations of students, faculty,
departments, programs, and the College administration with regard to evaluation in all your courses, including grade reviews
and resolution of academic grievance. The ISEP is available on the Dawson website
(https://www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/governance/institutional-student-evaluation-policy/).

2
10. Issues regarding absenteeism, personal problems, late submission of homework/written assignments, missed
exams/quizzes, exam/quiz/assignment results, medical certificates etc. must be discussed in the teacher’s office, and not in
the classroom during/before/after class time! Should you miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact your teacher, as
soon as possible, and to make all the necessary arrangements.

*Updated December 2024

IMPORTANT! Passing requirements (Summative Assessment)

60% (21/35) in the combined evaluations of the following:

60% minimum in combined oral and written assessments (21/35 points)

Students who fail to achieve this minimum requirement will receive a maximum final grade of 55%.

In-Class Oral Work/Participation: Explanation of Marks

IN-CLASS participation is defined as ACTIVE participation: being present (physically and mindfully), being
flexible (when asked, changing pairs or groups gracefully), leaving your comfort zone and making a constant
effort to speak Spanish as much as possible. It also means participating throughout the duration of group work,
contributing to discussions, reading aloud, asking questions or for explanations, when necessary, by raising
your hand. Active participation is not just answering when the teacher calls on you.

5= Excellent to exceptional work in class. You have participated in (almost) every class, and it’s obvious you
are making fantastic progress in your oral expression.

4 = Good to very good work. I have heard your voice often enough to know that you are making good progress
in your oral expression.

3 = Questionable to fair work. You have made few contributions in class. You are not on task during class time
and/or poorly prepared for the day’s lessons. You use English/French more in class than Spanish.

2-1 = Poor work. You are often unprepared for the day’s lessons and unable to keep up with the class’s pace.
You have not demonstrated sufficient mastery of the grammar and vocabulary presented in class. You use
English/French significantly more in class than Spanish.

0 = Lack of interest in class and subject.
