CAT-2-1

The document outlines an assignment for ECE 2508 - Geotechnical Engineering, requiring students to answer a specific question based on subsurface investigation data for a construction site. Key tasks include estimating the friction angle, modulus of elasticity, geostatic stress, bearing capacity, foundation pressures, and settlements of the soil layers. Additional questions involve calculations related to a footing on saturated clay and a mat foundation, emphasizing practical applications of geotechnical principles.

ECE 2508- GEOTEHNICAL ENGINEERING CAT 2 (Due 10/28/2024)

Answer Question 1 only. Submit your answer in more than two plain paper pages. No additional
page will be permitted or graded.
1. Results from subsurface investigation for a construction site for a building reveled 7.5
m thick well graded fine to medium silty sand layer overlaying 10 m thick very dense
layer of a clayey gravel layer. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) with an auto hammer
was taken within the silty sand layer. The average N- value silty sand layer was 4.
Ground water encountered a depth of 7.5 m below ground. The unit weight of silty sand
and clayey gravel are=16.5 kN/m3 and=20 KN/m3 respectively. The proposed
building will be on square footing, B=1 to be constructed at a depth of 1.5 m below the
ground and carrying of 900 kN and a moment of 270 kN-m on its base.
Using the information above, answer the following question
(i) Estimate the friction angle of the silty fine sand layer from AASHTO, taking the
lower bound value
(i) Determine the Modulus of Elasticity, E of the silty sand layer
(ii) Determine the initial geostatic stress and change in stress due to the foundation
loading (2:1 method) at the mid of the silty sand layer
(iii) Determine the bearing capacity of the soil
(iv) Determine the maximum, qmax and minimum, qmax foundation pressure and
comments on the values
(v) Is the proposed safe against bearing capacity failure?
(vi) Estimate the settlement of the sand layer using Hough’s method of settlement
(vii) What would be estimate the settlement of the sand layer using Schectman’s strain
influence factor method 5 years after construction (Note: divide the stratum into
three layers)
2. A footing of 3m x 4 m in plan view is situated on saturated clay stratum with a thickness
of 5m. The embedded depth of footing is 1m, Assume,=18.0 kN/m3, e=0.8 Cc=0.25,
Cs =0.005 and p=80 kN/m2. Calculate the settlement of the footing under net bearing
pressure of 200 kN/m2.
3. A mat foundation has dimension 25m x 30 m in plan view. The total load on the mat is
120 MN. The mat is situated on a saturated clay having a unit wight of ,=17.5 kN/m3,.
Determine the excavation depth for this mat to be fully compensated foundation.
