The Trouble with Growing Cities

O UR CITIES are becoming increasingly crowded and there is an urgent need to
1
a growing population, despite a shortage of building space
for new homes. As a result, large areas of land are being 2 into
building sites, and the edges of towns are 3
into the countryside.
This is good for the people who need homes, but very bad for the environment, and it’s difficult
to balance the needs of both. One alternative could be to 4 older
buildings in our cities that have become run down by making improvements to them. The people
who 5 these homes would also then benefit from living in an
attractive, historic setting. Not only would this solve part of the housing problem, but it would also
go some way to increasing employment opportunities for those who 6
to cities and towns from rural areas in search of work.
