Distinguishing Text-types According 1-2
Texts are written for a variety of purposes, using different forms and standards
of composition. These forms of writing are known as text types. Broadly speaking,
there are various non-fiction text types. Classification, explanation, enumeration, and
time order are just few of them. Within these are many more narrowly defined text
types. Understanding text types helps you understand the purpose of the text. The
purpose of an advertisement, for example, is to persuade the reader to buy or do
something. The purpose of an email to a friend is often to inform. The purpose of a
research article is to examine an issue fully, and to argue a particular point with the
support of evidence.
Learning Task 1. Read each short text. Identify the purpose of each one
whether it is to inform, to instruct, or to persuade. Write the letter of your answer in
your answer sheet.
a. to inform
b. to instruct
c. to persuade
3
3. Have you imagined not drinking water or any other liquid within the next
eight hours? This is what you basically do while you sleep. Your body becomes slowly
dehydrated or water-deprived because it needs fluid for the body organs to function or
do their job while you are sleeping. If you drink a large glass of water upon waking up,
it would fire up your energy for 90 minutes. Water helps your body flush out toxins,
especially through your kidneys. Since your brain tissue is 75 percent water, it needs
to be dehydrated enough to operate well. You can feel drained, exhausted, or
experience tiredness and mood swings if you lack water. So, would you now start
drinking a big glass of water first thing in the morning or drop the idea? The choice is
yours.
a. to inform
b. to instruct
c. to persuade
What is it?
Knowing different text types helps develop writing. Writing is a critical tool for
thinking. This is because writing stimulates the mind and helps make neural
connections to ideas that would not have been thought of. It is an excellent way to
improve writing and reading comprehension. Text structure is the arrangement of
ideas and the relationships among the ideas; readers and writers who are familiar with
text structure recognize how the information is unfolding.
Example:
Weight Loss
People looking to lose weight have a few options: exercise, diet, weight loss
pills, and surgery. Exercising involves going to a gym, working out at home, or joining
some sort of class or sports team. Those who are dieting can talk to a doctor about a
plan for them. Weight loss pills can be taken, if proper precautions and directions are
followed. Individuals who are severely overweight can talk to a doctor about having
surgery to lose the weight that they need.
5
Explanations detail and logically describe the stages in a process, such
as the water cycle, or how a steam engine works. Other examples could be how a law
is made, or why we blink when we sneeze.
Example:
Recycling Glass Bottles
Recycling glass helps the environment and it is easy to do. When people
recycle the glass bottles, they are taken to a recycling plant. At the plant bottle tops
and lids are removed. After that, the glass is washed and crushed into small pieces.
The crushed glass is then sent a bottle factory. Here it is mixed with a small amount of
sand. It is then melted in a furnace. Finally, the hot liquid glass comes out of the
furnace and goes into a machine that makes it into bottles. Recycled glass is as good
and as a strong new glass. Glass can be recycled many times without losing its
quality.
Example:
Example:
How to mold a Sculpture
First, clean the clay by getting rid of the bits of sand and dirt from it. Then, add
or remove water from the clay if necessary. If the clay is too wet, it will not hold a
shape. And if it is too dry, it will not be flexible enough to mold. Next, begin to shape
the clay into something-with your bare hands or with tools. Roll and push clay into
shapes or pull off and stick back on different places. After the clay has been molded,
put it into a kind of oven to be fired. Then, build a fire. As the fire slowly gets hotter
and hotter, water is baked out of the clay. Sooner or later, the clay dries up and
becomes hard with a new shape. Remove it from the oven, and let it cool.
Afterwards, you may paint it or put some designs of your choice on it.

Learning Task 2. Carefully read the paragraph below. Answer the questions that
follow. Write the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.
Trees are beneficial to mankind. Trees help prevent water pollution. They control the
sudden flow or rainfall into the earth below the tree. This prevents pollutants to be
carried to the ocean. Trees act like sponge that filters this water naturally and uses it
to recharge groundwater supplies. They lessen the noise from nearby streets and
freeways and create an eye-soothing view of green. Trees absorb dust and wind and
reduce glare. Trees conserve energy. Three trees placed strategically around a
single- family home can cut summer air conditioning needs by up to 50 percent. By
reducing the energy demand for cooling our houses, we reduce carbon dioxide and
other pollution emissions from power plants.
2. List down the four points (supporting details) given by the author to prove the
main idea. The first one is provided for you.

Learning Task 3. Read the paragraph and answer the questions that follow. Write the
letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.
Heat deep in the core of the Earth continually escapes toward the surface. As
the heat rises, it warms rock, which begins to rise slowly. This molten rock, or magma
usually cools within. Sometimes, however, magma continue to push upward. It
absorbs water in the ground and heats it to produce steam or gas. Gas-filled magma
is lighter and can rise through a series of channels toward the surface. When it
reaches a vent or opening in the surface, it spews out. Magma that erupts from a vent
is called lava, reaching temperatures of more than 1000 degrees centigrade. When
cooled the lava and other materials, such as ash and rocks, build up to form the core
of a volcano.
Learning Task 4. Read the paragraph and answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers on your answer sheet.
8
The Herztsprung-Russell Diagram shows the three very different types of stars.
The first type is called the main sequence which includes the sun. These stars are
fueled by nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium. The hotter they are, the
brighter they become. They last for about five billion years. The second type includes
the super giants. As they reach old age, they deplete their hydrogen supply. Their
core contracts as their outer layers expand. Eventually, they will explode becoming
nebula or supernova, then white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes. Third, smaller
stars consequently become white dwarfs, shrinking and depleting their nuclear fuels,
finally becoming cold, dark, black dwarfs.
Learning Task 5. Read the paragraph and answer the questions that follow. Write your
answers on your answer sheet.
Boiling is perhaps the safest way to purify cloudy water. You will need a boiling
pot, fire, salt, a coffee filter or cloth, charcoal, and cotton. First, prefilter the cloudy
water with a cotton filter or folded cloth. Then, boil the filtered water. Add a small
amount of salt to improve the taste of the water as it is boiling. If you are above 2000
feet altitude, boil for three minutes. Next, let the water cool. Meanwhile, make a cotton
and charcoal filter by crushing the charcoal and putting it in the cotton as trap. This will
remove impurities and still some bad taste from the boiled water. Finally, filter the
boiled water through the cotton trap.

Learning Activity 6. Distinguish what text-types are the following paragraph below.
Write your answer in your answer sheet.
1. Pablo Picasso is known for his abstract style. That means that his art
looks out of this world. Picasso’s father was also an artist. He started training
him when Picasso was seven. When Picasso was 13, he was so good that his
father quit painting. At the age of 16, Picasso went to art school.
4. Rembrandt is a famous artist known for his oil paintings. He was born on
1606. He knew that he wanted to be a painter by 1620, when he was at
college. Rembrandt was ambitious. By 1625 he had opened his own art studio.
He would go on to paint many masterpieces.

Summarizing Various Text
Types based on
Elements
What I need to know?
In lesson 1, you have learned about the various text types such as classification,
explanation, enumeration and time order. In this lesson, you will be learning how to
summarize those various non-fiction text types basing on elements.
What is it?
In summarizing the text types such as enumeration and time order, you can
use the signal words like first, next, then, after, eventually, finally etc. In
classifications, you organize things into categories and give examples of things
that fit into each category. While for explanation texts, you can take into considerations
the main idea and the supporting details of the texts you read.
1. Read the text- You should read the article more than once to make sure
you’ve thoroughly understood it.
2. Take notes- Highlight and write down the main ideas and important details
of the text. The main idea of a paragraph is the author's message about the topic. It is
11
often expressed directly or it can be implied. On the other hand, important details are
the information that support the main idea.
3. Write the summary- Now that you know the key points that the article
aims to communicate, you need to put them in your own words.
4. Check the summary against the article- Finally, read through the text
once more to ensure that you’ve accurately represented the author’s work and haven’t
missed any important information.
Examples:
The Igorots are a very distinct group of people, tribe who originate from the
Northern provinces of the Philippine archipelago, the Cordillera Administrative Region
(CAR). The word Igorot means mountain people.
Inhabiting the rugged terrain of the Cordillera Region are six ethnic tribes such as
the Apayao/Isneg, Bontoc, Ibaloi, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Kankana-ey.
The Apayao/Isneg inhabits the banks of the Apayao River and its tributaries in
Northern Luzon. Like most erstwhile headhunters, they are slash-and-burn (Kaingin
system) farmers who have recently, under the influence of their neighbors, begun to
practice wet-rice agriculture. The Bontocs live in the banks of the Chico River in the
Central Mountain Province. They also formerly practiced head-hunting and had
distinctive body tattoes. The Ibaloi people were traditionally an agrarian society. Many of
them continue with their agriculture and rice cultivation. The Ifugaos are among the
ethnic groups living in northern Luzon, particularly in the Cordillera region. Despite being
labeled a fifth-class municipality, the province of Ifugao is endowed with rich
vegetation. The Ifugaos have long depended on wet rice farming and have developed a
profound rice farming tradition. Inhabiting the drainage areas of the middle Chico River
in Kalinga Province, the Kalingas are noted for their strong sense of tribal awareness
and the peace pacts they have made among themselves. They practice both wet and
dry rice farming and have developed an institution of peace pacts which has minimized
traditional warfare and headhunting and serves as a mechanism for the initiation,
maintenance, renewal and reinforcement of kinship and social ties. The Kankanaey’s
domain includes Western Mountain Province, Northern Benguet, and Southeastern
Ilocos Sur. Like most Igorots, Kankanaey tribe built sloping terraces to maximize farm
space in the rugged terrain of the Cordilleras.
Unlike most of the Philippines, which were ruled by the Spaniards for about four
hundred years, the Cordillera region was unfazed by the Spanish colonization. They are
a pre-Hispanic mountainous highland society that has survived through Spanish
colonization. The Igorot tribes are held together by their common socio-cultural traits as
well as their geographic proximity to each other.
*Summary (1)

Plants are the beautiful living things on the planet Earth. They are classified
according to flowering plants and non-flowering plants. The flowering plants produce
flowers for reproduction. But, non-flowering plants don’t produce flowers for reproduction.
Flowering plants (angiosperms) comprise about 90 percent of the Kingdom Plantae.
The total number of described species exceeds 250,000, and many tropical species are as
yet unnamed. During the past 130 million years, flowering plants have colonized practically
every conceivable habitat on earth, from sun-baked deserts and windswept alpine summits
to fertile grasslands, freshwater marshes, dense forests and lush mountain meadows.
Although a number of flowering plants live in aquatic habitats and have adapted to the
saline conditions of dry lake beds and salt marshes, relatively few species live submersed
in the oceans. True marine angiosperms are found throughout the oceans of the world,
although most species are distributed in tropical regions.
Non-flowering plants are divided into two main groups according to the way they
reproduce. One group is called gymnosperm which reproduces itself from seeds, while the
other group reproduces from the spores.
Gymnosperms are the group of non-flowering plants. They reproduce from the seeds,
which are open to the air without any covering.
One main group of the gymnosperms is called conifers. Conifers produce seeds
when the pollen from male cones reaches the female cones. Conifers stock their seeds in
the cones. Examples of the conifers are pines, cypresses, redwoods. When the seeds
reach the rich soil, they start to germinate and grow.
The other group of the non-flowering plants doesn’t produce seeds for reproduction.
Instead, they use the spores for their reproduction. Spores are very small organisms

• Helps students connect key ideas to sense or meaning; summarizing helps them
absorb the ideas in the text.
Learning Task 4. Read the text below. Summarize it in 5 sentences considering the
summarizing steps mentioned earlier. Be familiar with the rubric below which will be
used in rating your summary.
Sharks
Sharks are known as the fiercest fish in the ocean. Sharks have been around for
about 400 million years and are the top ocean predators. At the top of the food chain,
sharks are feared by swimmers. However, these fish are also fascinating creatures.
You probably know sharks have very sharp teeth, but did you know they never
run out of them? If a shark loses a tooth, another moves forward from within the shark’s
jaw where it keeps a nearly unlimited supply of replacement teeth. This way, it’s
almost
17
impossible for a shark to end up without a full set of teeth. This is a phenomenon unique
to the shark. No other animal in the world has teeth quite like the shark’s. A shark can
go through as many as 20,000 teeth in its lifetime!
While sharks have a reputation for being fierce and dangerous, not all sharks are
ferocious carnivores. Some of the largest sharks are the most harmless. For example,
the basking shark and the whale shark are two of the largest types of sharks, but they
eat plankton. These sharks could be considered “gentle giants.”
Some sharks are truly dangerous. The great white shark and the tiger shark are
just two of the most well-known hunters. On the other hand, humans are also hunters.
People kill thousands of sharks a year to make food and products to sell. Who do you
think are the most dangerous predators?

Learning Task 1. Read the following sentences below. Draw a thumb up symbol ( )
if you agree with the statement and draw a thumb down symbol ( ) if you disagree.
Write your answer on the blank.
Which of the statements above do you agree with? Which of the statements
above do you disagree with? What made you decide to agree or disagree with these
statements? What is your opinion about these statements?
In the activity that you just did, you have already shown your opinion about the
issues happening around you. You may either choose to strongly agree or strongly
disagree and voice out your opinion. This is called “taking a stand”.
Taking a stand means to voice your opinion on issues that are happening
around you. To take a stand is to determine effort to agree or disagree, to defend
something and to oppose or commend something. To make a stand means to make
a definite position or opinion about something. Someone who "makes a stand" is
doing something a lot stronger and more active.” When one says he takes a stand on proper
waste segregation, then he is stating his opinion that it should be practiced. But to make a
stand is to put in extra effort to just stating one’s opinion like going out of one’s way to
encourage others to do the same or advocating a drive in the community to practice proper
waste segregation.

Lesson
4 Providing Evidence
to Support
In this lesson, you are expected to distinguish facts from opinion, and provide
evidence to support opinion/fact.
Before we proceed to the lesson for this week, let us see how well you can
recognize fact and opinion statement.
Learning Task 1: Tell whether each statement is a fact or an opinion. Write your
answer on your answer sheet.
25
What is it?
What is it?
FACT
A fact is something to be true or something that has occurred or has been proven
correct and could be validated with pieces of evidence.
In addition, fact can be an event or information, based on factual circumstances,
that can be verified and supported by proof, statistics and documentations. A fact
contains data and research, it includes numbers, dates and ages.
Tips on how to differentiate between fact and opinion. Firstly, ask yourself, Is the
statement true? “Can the statement be proved”? If yes, then it is fact. Evidence to
support a fact can be easily found in books in a library’s reference section, as
well as by searching online using reliable sources of information, such as the
websites of reputable educational institutions.
Examples:
1. According to the Department of Health (DOH), there were 518, 407 confirmed
cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines as of January 27, 2021.
These are facts because there are studies regarding these particular statements.
OPINION
26
Others may agree or disagree with an opinion but they cannot prove or
disapprove it.
Opinions may not be rooted in fact or be supported by strong evidence, though
there are exceptions, such as in the case of expert opinions.
I think…
I believe…
I feel…
In my opinion…
In my point of view…
People should…
Example: I think Michael Jordan is the best basketball player of all time.
(It is one person’s feelings/idea about an athlete he admires. We can’t prove if is
right or wrong.)
Other Examples:
1. Social distancing is one of the best precautionary measures we do to
prevent COVID-19 from spreading.
This is a fact because it can be observed, and an actual thing that exists.
4. Broccoli is so yummy.
This is an opinion because the statement is someone’s point of view about
broccoli. For those who do not eat broccoli, they may not agree with the
statement.
You have learned that a statement of fact can be proven. If the statement
proves to be wrong, it becomes an error. An opinion tells what you think or believe
which may not be necessarily true. However, you can support your claim by citing what
a witness says, mentioning a source from your research, or recalling a direct
observation you made.
Learning Task 2: Read each statement and identify if it contains facts or opinions. Circle
the facts and/or underline the opinions. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
28
5. There are twelve inches in a foot.
6. I love going to Promenade De Dasmariñas. It is a fun place to be.
7. Overweight people are lazy.
8. The sun is a very bright star. The sun is fun to look at.
9. Living things need air, food and water to survive.
10. Dogs have fur. Dog’s fur is pretty.
What is more?
Learning Task 3. Analyze each statement whether it is a fact or an opinion. If it’s a
fact, write Fact and explain how it can be proven. If it is an opinion, write Opinion and
give a short explanation. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
Examples: According to the 2015 census, Dasmariñas City has a population of 659,019
people.
Fact or Opinion How can this be proven? Fact. Reference from statistics and
online resources
I believe that Dasmariñas is the most progressive city in the whole Province
of Cavite.
Fact or opinion: How can this be proven? Opinion. because of the phrase I
believe in the beginning of the sentence.
8. China has quarantined the city of Wuhan in Hubei Province last on January 2020.
Fact or Opinion How can this be proven?
29
9. The prettiest color in rainbow is red.
Fact or Opinion How can this be proven?
Remember:
Learning Task 4. Write a one paragraph consisting of 5-7 sentences by giving your
opinion/stating fact/s regarding the question. Provide evidence to your answers. You
can support your claim by citing or mentioning a source from your research. Be guided
by the rubrics below.
