Phonation and Resonance Exercises
Phonation and Resonance Exercises
Resonance is a phenomenon that allows the amplification of speech sounds using the
bony cavities, especially the paranasal sinuses and oral cavity, avoiding vocal abuse.
Phonation is the activity of the vocal cords that are exercised by the passage of air and
allow the
emission of voice to be amplified and subsequently modified by the organs of
articulation (velum
of the palate (tongue, lips, teeth) and in this way produce the articulated sounds of oral
language.
Below are a series of exercises suggested to stimulate and control the output of the
voice through the
oral cavity by projecting it and once this purpose is achieved, exercise the functioning of
the cords
control the use of abdominal breathing and the nasal-oral respiratory cycle (i.e., taking
air through the
nose and expulsion through the mouth) or short refills through the mouth. One of the
criteria that must be taken into account
What counts when doing these exercises is the number or time of emission of each
sound for one take
air, Remember that we are looking to emit a greater number of sounds per air intake.
. Take air in through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth, time how long it
takes.
eject it, remember that the time must be long, the minimum value is 10 seconds.
. Make the sound /a/, prolong it as long as possible, with a stable voice. The minimum
value, if any
woman, it's 15 seconds. If it is a man, the minimum value will be 25 seconds.
. To position the voice, make the /m/ sound, keeping in mind that the lips should be
closed, and the emission must be prolonged and maintained /mmmmmmm/ the
sensation that must
have is the nasal or labial vibration and you should listen to the sound located in the
nose (cornet), avoid the
exercise if you feel vocal strain, it is an indication that it is done wrong.
Make as many consecutive series as possible with the vowels /aeiouaeiouaeiouaeiou/.
Perform the series with the vowels /a/ /e/ /i/ /o/ /u/ using voice beats. The sound quality
should be adequate and should avoid fatigue.
Make combinations with consonants and emit with voice beats /ta/ /te/ /ti/ /to/ /tu/ - /ka/
/ke/ /ki/ /ko/ /ku/ and so on with all the consonants.
Add a degree of difficulty to the exercise by doing it with syllables such as /tra/ /tre/ /tri/
/tro/ /tru/ - /gra/ /gre/ /gri/ /gro/ /gru/ and with the rest of the combinations /bra/ /dra/ /pra/
/fra/ /kra/.
Recite the numbers from 1 to 10 or, from 20 to 30 or, from 30 to 40, control all the
parameters worked on, these are: relaxation, breathing, phonation, resonance with this
exercise exaggerate the articulation.
You can use other automatic series such as the days of the week or the months of the
year, it is also useful to read short paragraphs out loud and above all keep in mind that
every time you speak you can exercise all these elements that have been proposed.
Remember that doing more is not better and that in any case, if signs of fatigue appear,
you should stop exercising and resume it later.
