Deixis & Grammar
DEIXIS
Deixis is a linguistic term derived from Greek,
meaning "pointing" or "indicating." It refers to
words and phrases, called deictic expressions
or indexicals, that cannot be fully understood
without additional contextual information.
Deixis is crucial for referring to people,
places, and times within a given context.
George Yule
Person Deixis
Person deixis deals with the grammatical persons
involved in an utterance, primarily expressed through
pronouns. The basic categories are:
1. First person: The speaker (e.g., "I", "we").
2. Second person: The addresser (e.g., "you").
3. Third person: Others who are neither the speaker nor the
addresseer (e.g., "he", "she", "it").
These pronouns shift roles depending on who is speaking. For
example, the pronoun "I" refers to the speaker when used by them,
but becomes "you" when someone else addresses the speaker.
This shift is a fundamental aspect of language learning for children

Example: "I'll put this here" (spoken by Andre to Devi) indicates

Andre plan to place an object in a specific location.

Spatial Deixis
Spatial deixis refers to the location relative to the
speaker and listener, often indicated by adverbs and
demonstratives. The primary terms are:

1. Proximal (near the speaker): "this," "here"

2. Distal (away from the speaker): "that," "there"

The interpretation of these terms depends on the speaker's and

listener's location. Spatial deixis can also involve verbs of motion
like "come" (toward the speaker) and "go" (away from the speaker).

Example: "I was looking at this little puppy in a cage..." uses "this"
to indicate the puppy near the speaker.

Temporal Deixis
Temporal deixis involves expressions of time relative to
the speaker's utterance. Key deictic terms include:
1. Proximal (near the time of speaking): "now," "today"
2. Distal (away from the time of speaking): "then,"
"yesterday," "tomorrow"

These terms rely on the timing of the utterance to be understood.

Temporal deixis also includes verb tenses, which situate actions in
time relative to the speaker's present.

Example: "Back in an hour" depends on when the note was written

to determine the wait time.
Another Example

Deixis and Grammar
Deictic expressions are embedded in the grammar of a
language, influencing how sentences are constructed
and understood. This includes not only pronouns and
adverbs but also tense markers in verbs. For instance,
the verb "go" in "I'm going to the store" contains an
implicit deictic element indicating movement away from
the speaker's current location.
Conclusion
Deixis refers to words and phrases that require context to
be understood, including person, spatial, and temporal
deixis. Personal deixis involves pronouns such as "I" and
"you", which change based on who is speaking. Spatial
deixis uses terms such as "this" and "that" to indicate
location relative to the speaker. Temporal deixis includes
time expressions such as "now" and "then", depending on
when something is said. These deictic expressions are
important in language for indicating person, place, and
time, and are integrated into the grammar of a language.
