MATHEMATICS

CLASS IX (Two and Half hours)


Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately.
You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers.

Attempt all questions from section A and any four questions from section B. All working,
including rough work, must be clearly shown and must be done on the same sheet
as the rest of the answer.
Omission of essential working will result in loss of marks.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in bracket []

SECTION A (40 marks)

Question 1
a) If a2 + = 23. Find i) a + ii) a - [3]
b) Show by distance formula that the points (-1, -1), (2, 3) and
(8, 11) are collinear. [3]
c) In the figure, <ABC = 900, <ACB = 300, AC = 20cm. Find [4]

a) Factorise the given expression completely, 21x2 – 8x – 4 [4]
b) Draw the graph of 3x – 2y + 6 = 0. The graph meets the
coordinate axes at A and B respectively. Write down
the coordinates of A and B. Find the area of the triangle
formed between the line and the coordinate axes. [6]
Question 3
a) Solve x + 3y = 5 and 7x – 8y = 6 [3]
b) If θ is an acute angle, solve for θ: (sec θ – 2) (√3 tan 2θ – 1) = 0 [4]
c) Three cubes of silver with sides 6cm, 8cm and 10cm are melted
and recast into a single cube. Find the cost of coating the surface
of the new cube with gold at the rate of Rs.4.50 per cm2. [3]

a) i) Find the median of the following data: 51, 35, 91, 29, 60,
55, 72, 63, 82, 85.
ii) If the number 63 is replaced by 36, find the new median.
iii) If the number 82 is removed from the data, what is the
new median? [4]
b) If √3 tan 2θ – 1 = 0, find θ and hence find
sin2 3θ – 2cos2 2θ + tan2 4θ [3]
c) Evaluate + - sin 280 sec 620+ cosec2 300 [3]

a) Two cubes of edge 12cm are joined end to end to form a
cuboid. Find the volume and the total surface area of the cuboid.[3]
b) If x + = 3. Find the value of x3 + [3]
c) The sum of the numerator and denominator of a fraction is 1
less than thrice the numerator. If the numerator and
denominator are increased by 2, the ratio of numerator
to denominator would be 3 : 5. Find the fraction. [4]

a) If 5 cos A – 12 sin A = 0., then find the value of [4]
b) Factorise the given expression completely: 4x2 – 9y2 + 12y – 4 [3]
c) Show that the points A(0, -1), B(-2, 3), C(6, 7) and D(8, 3) taken
in order form the vertices of a rectangle. [3]

a) Factorise the given expression completely: [3]
25(2x + y)2 – 16(x – 2y)2
b) The sum of the digits of a two- digit number is 9. If the digits
are reversed the new number decreased by 9 is equal to 4
times the original number. Find the original number. [4]
c) If the distance between the points (4, k) and (1, 0) is 5 units,
find k. [3]

a) Prove that cos2 300 + sin 300 + tan2 45 + sin3 900 = 3 [4]
b) The mean of eight variates is 10. Seven of them are 6, 6, 8, 10,
10, 8, 7. Find the 8th variate. [3]
c) If a + b + c = 12 and a2 + b2 + c2 = 100. Find ab + bc + ca [3]

b) The mean of 50 observations was 180. It was observed that the
value of 170 was wrongly copied as 140. Find the correct mean. [4]
