Introduction
Sikkim is a small yet beautiful northeastern state of India, known for its breathtaking landscapes,
diverse culture, and rich history. It is the least populous state in India but is home to a mix of
different ethnic communities, each contributing to its unique traditions.

Geographical Features
Sikkim is located in the eastern Himalayas, sharing borders with Nepal, Tibet (China), Bhutan, and
West Bengal. The state has a varied climate, from subtropical in the south to alpine in the north.
Major rivers include the Teesta and Rangeet, and famous lakes are Tsomgo and Gurudongmar.

History of Sikkim
Sikkim was originally inhabited by the Lepcha tribe. In 1642, Phuntsog Namgyal became the first
Chogyal (King) of Sikkim. The monarchy ruled until 1975 when Sikkim merged with India and
became its 22nd state.

Culture and Traditions


Sikkim's culture is influenced by three main ethnic groups: Lepchas, Bhutias, and Nepalis. Major
festivals include Losar, Pang Lhabsol, and Dashain. Traditional attire varies among communities,
with Bakhu and Kho being common.

Food of Sikkim
Sikkimese cuisine includes momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), phagshapa (pork dish), and
gundruk (fermented leafy vegetables). Popular drinks include Chaang (millet beer) and butter tea.

Dance and Music


Sikkim's traditional dances include the Cham Dance, Tamang Selo, and Singhi Chaam. Musical
instruments like Dhyangro (drum) and Tungna (string instrument) are commonly used.

Tribes and Language


The three main ethnic groups in Sikkim are the Lepchas, Bhutias, and Nepalis. The official language
is Nepali, but Sikkimese, Lepcha, Hindi, and English are also spoken.
