without replacement. Find the probability that
a) The first ball is a white ball.
b) The second ball is a yellow ball if the first ball is a white ball.
c) The second ball is a white ball.

2. The internet has become very important tool for students while doing their
assignment. It was found that, in one subject taught in a university, only 75% of the
students are regular internet users. It was further known that the probability that an
assignment was graded as good given that it is prepared by a regular internet user is
0.77 while the probability that an assignment was graded as good given that is
prepared by a non – regular internet user is 0.56. A student is selected at random
from the class. What is the probability that he
a) is a regular internet user given that he will get a good grade?
b) is a non - regular internet user given that he will get a good grade?

3. There is a test in an emergency course. From previous experience, the probability for
a candidate to pass the test was 0.6. If he fails, the candidate will re-sit the test and
the probability to pass is 0.75. If a candidate is randomly selected, find the
probability that the candidate will :
a) Fail the first test
b) Pass the first or the second test
c) Fail the first and the second test
d) Fail the second test given that he failed the first
test.

4. Ani, Sheela and Maria are sharing a single telephone line. If the phone rings, the
probability that the call is for Ani, Sheela and Maria is 0.1, 0.3 and 0.6 respectively.
The probability of Ani, Sheela and Maria staying at home when the phone rings is
0.7, 0.5 and 0.9 respectively. If all events are independent, find the probability when
the phone rings that:
a) Nobody is at home
b) The person who is supposed to receive the call is at home.
c) The call is for Ani and only Ani is not at home.
5. There are 60 candidates applying for a position in a private company. The number of
candidates according to their experience and qualifications are as below:
Degree holder Non-degree holder
Experience more than 3 years 12 6
Experience less than 3 years 24 18

Find the probability that a candidate:

a) Has at least 3 years’ experience.
b) Is a degree holder who has just finished his study,
c) If the candidate is a degree holder, what is the probability that he has more
than 3 years’ experience
d) He has less than 3 years’ experience given that he is a degree holder.

6. Among the passengers arriving at the KLIA, 50% fly on MAS, 30% fly on SIA and 20%
fly on other airlines. For passengers arriving on MAS, 50% are travelling on business
reasons, while passengers arriving on SIA and other lines are 60% and 90%
respectively are travelling for the same reasons. If a passenger is randomly selected
from a group of arrivals, find the probability that the passenger
a) Is travelling on SIA and for business reasons
b) Is travelling for business reasons
c) Is travelling on other airlines given that he is travelling on business reasons

7. Only 2% of the college students go to their lectures by motorcycle while 35% of

them go by bicycle. The probabilities of these students being late by these methods
are 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. At the same time, the probability that students being
late on foot is 0.1.
a) If one student is chosen at random, what is the probability that he will be late for
lecture?
b) If one student is late on a particular day, what is the probability that the student
go to his lecture on foot?

8. The table below shows the distribution of student membership in 3 uniformed clubs in a
school.

Police cadets Scouts Red Crescent Sob total

Boys 40 y z 120

Girls x 70 w 180

Sub total 50 100 t 300

a) State the value of t,w,x,y and z.
b) If a student is randomly chosen, find the probability that the student is a
member of
i) The Police Cadets.
ii) The Police Cadets given that the student is a girl
c) State whether the events “Police Cadet” and “Girls” are independent, giving a
reason for your answer.

9. The table below show the distribution of mobile phone sales recorded by an outlet.
