Not only have the motivations for individuals learning Korean become more varied, but the educational programs at institutions that teach Korean have also become more diverse to better match the needs of all students, To keep pace with such changes, the Sangmyung University International Language and Culture Education Center strives to meet the various needs of such a diverse group of Korean learners both inside and outside of Korea. The current volume marks our continued efforts in the development and publication of Korean language materials. ‘The Master KOREAN series includes a total of six volumes, each of which corresponds to one level of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK). Thus, after completing each level in the series, students will be prepared to sit for the corresponding level of the TOPIK. This volume in the series, Master KOREAN 2-1 was written to help learners who have completed the introductory level of Korean instruction. Through this book, learners will not only become familiar with the basic structure and expressions of the Korean language, but also practice what they have learned through various activities while also learning about Korean culture through communicative situations. In this way, learners will become proficient in basic ‘communication skills that allow them to communicate in Korean effectively. This series incorporates the basic principles of educational material development while focusing on content related to learning general knowledge about the Korean language as well as techniques for how to use the language. Moreover, by also providing information about Korean culture that all foreign learners should learn, we have helped ensure that learners can master the Korean language more effectively. Efficiently utilizing their many years of Korean, instruction along with empirical data, the authors have created a text that reflects the learning strategies of learners to make the content both easy to study and interesting for the learner, To this erd, we have included detailed explanations of the content as well as practice exercises, so that all learners can benefit from this series, regardless of whether they are studying at a languege institution or on their own. ‘The Master KOREAN series applies the principles and methods of communicative language teaching so that learners can enjoy learning Korean through the various activities we have included. In addition, we have included a variety of visual and audio materials to aid in comprehension and make it easier for learners to cover the content. In this current period of growing worldwide interest in the Korean language, we hope that, our systematically developed Master KOREAN series, which is based on the authors’ many years of experience teaching Korean, will satisfy the needs of Korean language learners around the world.
