Relations

Reflexive relation: R : A →A and if every element of A is related to itself

then it is reflexive relation.

Symmetric relation : R : A →A is said to be a symmetric relation iff

(a, b) ∈ R ⇒(b ,a) ∈ R for all a, b ∈ A.

Transitive relation: R : A → A is said to be a transitive relation

iff (a, b) ∈ R and (b, c) R ⇒ (a, c) ∈ R for all a, b, c ∈ A

Equivalence relation: A relation which is reflexive, symmetric and

transitive, simultaneously.
Let R be a relation defined on N as a R b is 2a+ 3b is
a multiple of 5, a,b ∈ N. Then R is

A. Not reflexive
B. Transitive but not symmetric
C. Symmetric but not transitive
D. An equivalence relation
A relation R {(x, y) : |x - y|} is divisible by 3; x, y ∈ R; (set of real
numbers)}, then R is

A. Symmetric
B. Reflexive
C. Transitive
D. All of these
The minimum number of elements that must be added to the relation
R = {(a,b), (b,c)} on the set {a,b,c} so that it becomes symmetric &

A. 4
B. 7
C. 5
D. 3

Properties of Transpose Properties of Trace

1. (A')' = A.
1. Tr(pA) = pTr(A)
2. (KA)' = KA'. K being a scalar.
2. Tr(pA + qB) = pTr(A) + qTr(B).
3. (A + B)' = A' + B'. 3. Tr(AB) = Tr(BA), provided AB and BA both
exist.
4. (AB)' = B'A'.

5. (ABC)' = C'B'A'.

2. Determinant is zero if two rows or columns
C1 ➝ C1 + 𝛂C2 + 𝞫C3
have equal
or proportional values
5. |AB| = |A| |B|

Skew-Symmetric Matrix

Properties

1. In skew symmetric matrix all the diagonal elements are zero.

2. For any matrix (A+ AT) is always symmetric and (A-AT) is skew symmetric
3. Any matrix can be written as sum of symmetric and skew symmetric matrix.
Some more Matrices

1. Orthogonal Matrix: ATA = AAT = I

2. Idempotent Matrix: A2 = A
3. Involutory Matrix : A2 = I (Unit Matrix)
4. Periodic Matrix: Ak+1 = A where k is least positive integer
5. Nilpotent Matrix: Ak = O (null matrix), k is least positive
integer and k is called index of the nilpotent matrix.
Important Results

1. Determinant of skew symmetric matrix of odd order is zero

2. Determinant of diagonal matrix is equal to the product

of its diagonal elements.

3. Matrix whose determinant is zero is called Singular Matrix

otherwise it is Non-Singular Matrix.
