BIPM_-_VIM4_2CD_Distribution-Letter
I am pleased to initiate the circulation for review of the second Committee Draft (CD) of the document
JCGM 200,
This document has been prepared by the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology, of which your
organization is a member, specifically by Working Group 2. This document is now being circulated for
review amongst the eight member organizations (BIPM, IEC, IFCC, ILAC, ISO, IUPAC, IUPAP, and
OIML).
In addition to the VIM4 2CD, the WG2 experts have prepared a track-changes version of the document
in which the VIM4 1CD and the VIM4 2CD are compared. They have also prepared seven other
documents that contain their responses to the comments received on the VIM4 1CD. All of these
documents can be found from the following links:
I propose to follow a similar review process to that used previously by the JCGM:
1. By 9 November 2023, each member organization should send their formal comments,
both technical and editorial, to the JCGM Chairman ([email protected]). Early
sight of comments from organizations, before the November deadline, would be
welcome. Each organization is kindly asked to collate their comments to avoid
duplication and to use the electronic template available on the BIPM website:
Commenting template
3. After WG2 has reviewed and discussed the comments and revised the text accordingly, the
revised text will be sent to the JCGM Chairman who will forward it as a VIM4 FDIS to each of
the eight member organizations.
4. Within five months of receipt of the VIM4 FDIS, each organization will be asked to send its
formal approval/disapproval of the document to the JCGM Chairman.
o (Note: negative votes must be justified by comments.)
o (Note: positive votes can only be accompanied by editorial comments.)
5. The JCGM Chairman will table all the results and present them to the JCGM. Depending on the
outcome of the approval/disapproval process, a final text will be formally approved for
publication in the name of all the organization’s members.
It is worth noting that at the creation of the JCGM, it was agreed that the JCGM operates by consensus,
as defined in ISO/IEC Guide 2:1996.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Martin Milton
JCGM Chairman
