NFC AND CAMERA-BASED ATTENDANCE SYSTEM
USING IOT INTERFACE

SYNOPSIS
AIM:
The aim of project, "NFC and Camera-Based IoT Attendance System", is to
develop a smart, automated attendance management solution that enhances accuracy,
security, and efficiency. By integrating NFC technology with facial recognition and the
IoT interface, the system ensures that attendance is recorded in real-time, minimizes the
possibility of proxy attendance, and allows for seamless monitoring and reporting via a
cloud-based interface.

ABSTRACT:
This project focuses on developing an automated attendance system using
Near Field Communication (NFC) and camera-based technology integrated with the
Internet of Things (IoT) to simplify and enhance the traditional method of tracking
attendance. The system employs NFC-enabled ID cards, allowing students to mark their
attendance by tapping the card on an NFC reader. In addition, a camera captures the
student’s image for identity verification, preventing proxy attendance. The data from
the NFC tag and camera are processed by an ESP32 microcontroller, which uploads the
verified attendance information to a cloud server using an IoT interface for real-time
tracking and management.
By integrating IoT, the system allows authorized personnel to monitor and access
attendance data remotely through a web-based dashboard, providing real-time reports
and insights. The primary aim is to create a reliable, efficient, and secure attendance
solution that addresses the limitations of traditional methods. Automation reduces
manual effort and time while improving accuracy and security through facial
recognition.
This system is designed for educational institutions but can be scaled for other
environments such as offices or events. The use of affordable components like NFC and
the ESP32 microcontroller ensures cost-effectiveness without compromising
performance. In summary, this NFC and camera-based IoT attendance system offers an
innovative and efficient solution to modern attendance management needs.

WORKING PRINCIPLE:
The NFC and Camera-Based IoT Attendance System is designed to automate the
process of tracking attendance by integrating Near Field Communication (NFC) and
camera-based technology, coupled with cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT)
infrastructure. This system simplifies attendance management by using NFC-enabled
ID cards and real-time image capture to ensure accurate identity verification and data
recording. The ESP32 microcontroller serves as the core of the system, managing
communication between the NFC reader, camera module, and cloud-based storage.

In operation, students are given NFC-enabled ID cards, each embedded with a

unique tag that stores their identification data. Upon arrival, the student taps their NFC
card onto the reader, which uses radio frequency (RF) technology to read the data from
the card. The NFC reader sends the tag’s unique ID to the ESP32 microcontroller, which
processes the information to authenticate the student’s identity by matching the UID
with stored records. After NFC authentication, the camera module is triggered to capture
the student’s image. This photograph is then compared to a pre-stored image of the
student, ensuring that the individual holding the NFC card is the rightful owner. This
two-step verification process eliminates the risk of proxy attendance, ensuring that only
registered students can mark their attendance.

The ESP32 microcontroller is responsible for handling data flow between the
NFC reader and the camera, as well as uploading attendance information to the cloud in
real-time via its Wi-Fi connection. The IoT interface allows for the seamless transfer of
attendance data, including the student’s ID, timestamp, and image, to a remote cloud
server. This cloud infrastructure not only provides secure and scalable storage but also
enables real-time monitoring of attendance data through a web-based dashboard.
Administrators and teachers can access this dashboard to view attendance records,
generate reports, and analyze student attendance trends. This system allows for easy
remote access, making it convenient to track attendance from anywhere with an internet
connection.

The system brings several advantages over traditional methods of attendance

tracking. By automating the entire process, it reduces the time and effort required to
manually take attendance, ensuring greater efficiency. Additionally, the integration of
facial recognition enhances security by preventing unauthorized individuals from using
someone else’s NFC card to mark their presence. The use of IoT ensures that attendance
data is updated in real-time, allowing administrators to access accurate records instantly.
The system is highly scalable due to its cloud-based architecture, making it suitable for
institutions of any size. Its cost-effectiveness, driven by affordable components like the
ESP32 and NFC reader, makes it a practical choice for educational institutions with
budget constraints.

In conclusion, the NFC and Camera-Based IoT Attendance System offers an

innovative and secure solution to attendance management. By combining NFC
technology with facial recognition and IoT connectivity, it ensures accurate attendance
tracking while minimizing the risk of errors or fraud. The system’s real-time data
processing and cloud storage capabilities enable efficient monitoring and reporting,
making it a valuable tool for modern educational institutions.
APPLICATIONS:
Educational Institutions:
➢ This system can be implemented in schools, colleges, and universities to
automate student attendance tracking. It reduces manual effort and prevents
proxy attendance by using both NFC cards and facial recognition.
Corporate Offices:
➢ Businesses can use this system to monitor employee attendance and
streamline check-ins. The integration with IoT allows real-time tracking and
remote access to attendance records, improving workforce management.
Event Management:
➢ The system can be utilized for large-scale events, conferences, or exhibitions
to efficiently manage participant entry, ensuring that only registered
individuals attend by using NFC badges and photo verification for security.

ADVANTAGES:
➢ Automation: The system automates attendance tracking, saving time and
reducing manual errors.
➢ Enhanced Security: By combining NFC and facial recognition, it prevents
proxy attendance and ensures only authorized individuals can mark
attendance.
➢ Real-Time Monitoring: The IoT integration allows for real-time updates of
attendance data to the cloud, enabling instant access from anywhere.
➢ Scalability: The cloud-based infrastructure supports easy expansion,
accommodating a large number of users without performance issues.
➢ Data Accuracy: The system provides accurate records of attendance,
reducing human error and enabling reliable reporting.
➢ Cost-Effective: It uses affordable hardware components like the ESP32,
NFC reader, and camera, making it a budget-friendly solution.
➢ Remote Access: Teachers and administrators can remotely access and
monitor attendance records through a web-based dashboard, making it
convenient for management.
CONCLUSION:
The NFC and Camera-Based Attendance System with IoT interface offers an
efficient and automated solution for tracking student attendance. By integrating NFC
technology, students can conveniently mark their attendance using NFC stickers on
their ID cards, which simplifies the process compared to traditional methods. The
camera module adds an additional layer of verification, enhancing the system’s
accuracy and security. The use of an IoT platform enables real-time data processing
and remote access to attendance records, making it a scalable solution for institutions
of various sizes.

The display module provides immediate feedback by showing the student's name
and success confirmation, further improving user experience. This project successfully
demonstrates how emerging technologies such as NFC, IoT, and cloud computing can
revolutionize routine tasks in educational institutions. In the future, the system could
be extended to include advanced features such as facial recognition, mobile integration,
and attendance analytics. The system is a reliable, secure, and user-friendly tool for
both students and administrators, representing a step forward in smart campus
solutions.
