Araku tribes
Araku is famous for its indigenous tribal
culture. Various tribal communities such as
Khord, B. Mallis, Bagata, Gadaba, Koya and
Savara(Sora) inhabit this region.
Savara or SoraTribe
The sora tribe is one of many tribes of the
araku valley, they are present in many
districts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

They speak a language called Sora.

Sora Language
Sora contains very little
formal literature but has
an abundance of folk
tales and traditions. Sora
is found in close proximity
to Odia and Telugu
speaking peoples making
a great deal of Sora
people bilingual. Like
many languages in
eastern India, Sora is
listed as 'vulnerable to
extinction' by UNESCO.
Sora
The Savara villages consist of houses with
mud walls and sedge grass roofs, usually
situated in foothills.
Sora

They are endogamous(Endogamy is the

practice of marrying within a specific social
group, religious denomination, caste, or ethnic
group, rejecting those from others as unsuitable
for marriage or other close personal
relationships ) and the clan, although absent, is
related to Birinda, which is exogamous.
Families are nuclear although joint or extended
families are also found. Marriages are made by
bride capture, elopement, and by negotiations.
Sora Art

Saura painting is a style of wall mural painting. These paintings,

also called ikons (or ekons) are visually similar to Warli paintings
and hold religious significance. It uses geometrical patterns.
Sora Religion
Sora religion is a mix of traditional shamanistic rituals and the surrounding
Hinduism predominant in surrounding populations. One particular Sora ritual has
to do with death. Sora retains a unique shamanistic view on the subject of death.
It is said that people who die from murders, suicides, or accidents are said to be
taken, in a sense, by the Sun spirit. These people, called usungdaijen, are then
said to reside in the Sun itself after death.[Sora uses spirits to explain many
phenomena. For example, if a girl in no relationship has a headache or a
migraine, it is said that the Pangalsum spirit, or Bachelor Spirit who contains the
souls of men who have died before wedlock, has placed a wreath of flowers
tightly around the girls head as a symbol of claiming her as his wife.
Sora
They are of medium or short stature. The adult
males dress with a gavancha and the women
with saris. They are also sometimes called
Lanjia Souras due to their dress pattern of
wearing a loin cloth hanging from behind and
which could be mistakenly identified as a tail
by a stranger.
Dhimsa dance
The dhimsa dance is generally performed during chaitra festivals (Ugadi,
Hanuman jayanthi, Chaitra Poornima, Rama Navami) or marriage celebrations or
any festive celebrations. There are twelve types of this dance.
COFFEE
Araku coffee is famous around the world. Coffee was introduced in Eastern Ghats
of Andhra Pradesh in 1898 by British in Pamuleru valley in East Godavari district.
Subsequently, it spread over to Araku Valley in the early 19th century. After
independence, the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department developed coffee
plantations in the valley. Plantation Development Corporation (GCPDC) exclusively
developed coffee plantations in tribal areas. All the plantations developed by the
government were handed over to the tribal farmers at two acres per family.

It is sold as an artisan coffee. There is also a museum, the araku coffee museum
describing the processing from sowing to harvesting of the world renowned araku
coffee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLQMQY0f7uM
