SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION BY USING QUADRATIC FORMULA

THE QUADRATIC FORMULA

For real numbers 𝒂, 𝒃 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄 with 𝒂 ≠ 𝟎, the solution of quadratic
equation 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 = 𝟎 is given by the quadratic formula:

−𝒃 ± √𝒃𝟐 − 𝟒𝒂𝒄
𝒙=
𝟐𝒂

Steps in solving quadratic equation by using

quadratic formula:

1. Write the equation in standard form (zero on one side of the equation)
𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 = 𝟎

2. Identify the numerical values for 𝒂, 𝒃 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄

−𝑏±√𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
3. Write the quadratic formula 𝑥 = 2𝑎

4. Substitute the numerical values of 𝒂, 𝒃 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄 in the quadratic formula 𝑥 =

−𝑏±√𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
.
2𝑎

5. Simplify to get the exact solution.

6. Use calculator if necessary.

7. Check the Solution
