Assignment Brief and Guidance
You are employed by a local contracting firm that specialises in residential projects. In the past, the
company has relied on the design and construction drawings produced by architects or supplied by
the client. Recognising that over the years the company has developed a strong sense of good
residential design and construction knowledge, they have decided to begin offering design and
information production services for their clients. They feel this will allow them to diversify the
services they offer.
In order to support their development of this part of the business, the company management has
asked you to prepare a number of ‘exemplar’ documents that can be used to help different teams in
the company to understand how construction information is developed and used. You have been
asked to prepare:
● A Construction Information Glossary that will explain the different types of construction
information that might be required for a project. This should also consider the relationship
between construction drawings and other forms of information that may be required for a
project and their relationship to costs. When developing this explanation of types of
construction information, you should compare the potential for improved efficiency and
accuracy in using digital tools to develop construction information.
● Recognising that in working on multiple projects, both in design and development as well as on
site, there is a need to be consistent. You are asked to setup 'Office Project Standards',
using the office standard CAD package. The standards should define the key symbols and
reusable objects (such as title blocks, sheet layouts, section marks, detail bubbles, north arrow,
etc.) as well as a set of layer standards, including non-printing layers, that define line styles,
colours and line weights.
● For a given project, you should develop a Digital Construction Information Package that
will include general arrangement drawings (e.g. plans, sections, elevations), selected details and
door/window schedules. Drawings should include dimensions, annotations and appropriate
hatching, based on your defined Office Project Standards. You are asked to include some
examples of different versions of the drawings so that there is a demonstration of how digital
tools can be used to facilitate the modification of drawings.
● In the Construction Information Output you will, on industry-standard sheets (minimum A3
sized), produce print output of the Digital Construction Information Package. These should be
checked to ensure that there is coordination between general arrangement drawings and details,
and that non-printing layers are not output. Finally, as part of your output, you should provide a
short Evaluative Statement, justifying your approach to the Office Project Standards, Digital
Construction Information Package and Output, highlighting areas of good practice, for company
management to reflect on in planning for the new development of the business.
