Affirmative to Negative and Vice-Versa

 No + Using opposite of the verbs, adjective or


adverb
Aff- He tried every possible plan.
Neg- He left no plan untried. (Learn)

Aff- Everybody likes Suman.


Neg- There is no one who dislikes Suman.
Nobody dislikes Suman.

Aff- Every inch of the fair-ground was occupied.


Neg- Not a single inch of the fair -ground was left unoccupied.

Aff- I admit that there was negligence on my part. (admit- do not deny)
Neg- I do not deny the fact that there was negligence on my part.

Aff- I shall always remember this kindness of yours.


Neg- I will never forget this kindness of yours.
Never will I forget this kindness of yours. [Inversion- Adverb + verb +
sub]
Aff- I was doubtful whether it was you.
Neg- I was not sure whether it was you.

Aff- Old fools surpass all other fools in folly. [Learn]


Neg- There is no fool like an old fool.

Aff- Every man makes mistakes sometimes.


Neg- There is no man who does not make a mistake sometimes.

Aff- He is sometimes foolish.


Neg- He is not always wise.

Neg- I never in my life laid a plan and failed to carry it out.


Aff- In my life I always succeeded in carrying out the plan, I laid.

Neg- No man could have done better. (No- Few)


Aff- Few men could have done better.

 Using too… to >>>>>> so… that….. cannot/ could not/ will

Aff- He is too fickle minded to be trusted.
Neg- He is so fickle minded that he cannot be trusted.

Aff- He is too weak to walk.


Neg- He is so weak that he cannot walk.

Aff- He is too sensitive to bear the insult.


Neg- He is so sensitive that he cannot bear the insult.
Neg- He is too intelligent not to be able to do the work on his own.
Aff- He is so intelligent that he will do the work on his own.

Neg- He is too god-fearing not to help the poor man.


Aff- He is so God-fearing that he will help the poor man.
Neg- He is so God-fearing that he cannot but help the poor man.

Neg- He is too credulous not to be easily deceived.


Aff- He is so credulous that he can be easily deceived.

Aff- Sardar Patel was so firm-minded that he faced every situation like a man.
Neg- Sardar Patel was too firm minded not to face every situation like a man.

Too…to – So that -- cannot/could not; will not/would not

 Too… to (simple sentence) --- So that ….cannot/could not (complex sentence)


 Rewrite with so that … cannot/could not
 Rewrite with Infinitive (to + verb)
 If the first clause is in Past Tense the second clause should also be in Past Tense

Negative- so that… cannot/ could not/ will not/ would not


Affirm- too ….. to + verb

Affirm- so that … can/ could/ will/ would

 Using Degrees of Comparison:


 Convert the Direct Superlative Degree into Positive Degree

Superlative- (Direct Superlative; One and only) -


(S)The most/ est adj + of all- (P)No other… as (post adj)
as (C) Sub + compa adj + than any other (singular noun)
Superlative- This is the best book of all. (Superlative; One and only)
Pos Deg- No other + qualified Noun + Singular verb + as…. As + this. [Negative Sent]
No other book is as good as this.

Superlative- This is the tallest building in our city.


Pos Deg- No other building in our city is as tall as this. [Negative]

When two things are compared- (say ‘A’ and ‘B’)


 Start the sentence from the other end.
 If the given sentence is Negative answer will be affirmative
and Vice-versa.
 If the given sentence is positive Degree answer will be
Comparative Degree and vice-versa.
 Such sentence cannot be written in Superlative Degree.

This car (A) is not as fast as that one (B). [Positive Deg- Negative Sentence]
That car is faster than this one. [Comparative Deg; Affirmative Sentence]

He (A) is stronger than his brother (B). [Comparative Degree- Affirmative]


His brother is not as strong as he (is). [Positive Deg; Negative Sentence]

Two subjects compared with ‘less’ Should be


started from the first subject itself.
The surface of the floor is less smooth than I thought. [less –comparative—
Positive]
The surface of the floor is not as smooth as I thought.
He is less superstitious than his brother.
He is not as superstitious as his brother.

Aff- He is greater than I. [Affirmative- Comparative]


Neg- I am not as great as he.

Aff- Alfred was the best king that ever lived in England. [Direct Superlative > Pos. Degree]
Neg- No other king that ever lived in England was as good as Alfred.

Aff- He was more rapacious than a griffin.


Neg- A griffin is not as rapacious as he.

Aff- Akbar was the greatest of the great Mughals.


Neg- No other Mughals was as great as Akbar.

Aff- The rose by any other name would smell as sweet. (Learn)
Neg- The rose by any other name would smell no less sweet.
 As soon as > No sooner …than
 No sooner + did/ does/ do + Subject + root verb + than (where
the first clause comes to an end)
As soon as (affirmative Sentence)-
No sooner + did + root verb + replace the (,) with ‘than’ +
the remaining part of the sentence
Aff- As soon as he went to sleep, someone knocked the door.
Neg- No sooner did he go to sleep than someone knocked the door.

Aff- As soon as Father came, we were back to our studies.


Neg- No sooner did father come than we were back to our studies.

Aff- As soon as we received your message, we heaved a sigh of relief.


Neg- No sooner did we receive your message than we heaved a sigh of relief.

Aff- As soon as rain poured in, we took shelter under a shade.

 Care little/ least- Do not care at all
