3. On a highway in a rural area of Adama, a car is traveling at a speed of 24 m/s. Is the driver

1. A sailor in a small sailboat encounters shifting winds. She sails 2 km east, then 4 km 37o S
of E, and then an additional distance in an unknown direction. Her final position is 6.8 km
directly east of the starting point. Find the magnitude and direction of the third leg of the
journey using component method.
2. An object is at x = 0 at t = 0 and moves along the x axis according to the velocity time
graph (see figure below). (a) What is the object’s accelerations between 6s and 9s? (b) What
is the object’s accelerations between 13s and 18s? (c) At what time(s) is the object moves
with constant speed? (d) What is the total displacement of the object’s motion?
3. A projectile is fired with an initial velocity vo such that it passes two points both a distance

4. A man pulls a block weighing 10 kg a distance of 10 m on a horizontal rough surface (µk =

time at which the velocity will be zero. (c) The instantaneous velocity and acceleration as

6. A block is given an initial velocity of 5 m/s up a frictionless 20o incline. How far up the
incline does the block slide before coming to rest?
7. A footballer kicks a football so that it leaves the ground at an angle of 30o with a velocity
of 30 m/s. The ball is aimed directly at an opposing player 90 m away who, the moment
the ball is kicked, starts to run forward to catch the ball (see figure below). At what speed
must he run to just catch the ball?

8. An object of mass m is sliding with speed vo at some instant across a level tabletop, with
which its coefficient of kinetic friction is µk . It then moves through a distance d and comes
to rest. What is the expression for the speed vo in terms of other quantities?
9. A 10 g bullet is fired into a stationary block of wood (m = 5 kg). The bullet imbeds into the
block. The speed of the bullet-plus-wood combination immediately after the collision is
0.6 m/s. What was the original speed of the bullet?
10. A wooden block slides down a 45o inclined plane in twice the time it takes to slide down
a frictionless inclined plane. What is the coefficient of kinetic friction between block and
inclined plane?
11. A ball of mass 0.5 kg starts at rest and slides down a frictionless track, as shown in figure
below. It leaves the track horizontally, striking the ground. (a) At what height above the
ground does the ball start to move? (b) What is the speed of the ball when it leaves the
track? (c) What is the kinetic energy of the ball when it hits the ground?

(c) What is the maximum height the object can reach from ground?
(d) What is the speed of the object just before it strikes the ground?

3. A 4 kg block starts from rest at the top of a 30o incline and slides a distance of 2 m down the
incline in 1.5 s. Find
(a) the magnitude of the acceleration of the block,
(b) the coefficient of kinetic friction between block and plane,
(c) the friction force acting on the block, and
(d) the speed of the block after it has slid 2 m.

4. The force acting on a particle is given by F = (4x − 6) N , where x is in meters.


(a) Draw the graph of the F versus x from x = 0 to x = 10 m.
(b) From your graph, find the net work done by this force on the particle as it moves from x = 0
to x = 10 m.

5. Four point masses are situated along the y-axis as follows: a 4 kg point mass is at 13 m, a 5 kg
point mass is at 12.5 m, a 2.5 kg point mass is at the origin, and a 6 kg point mass is at 21.5 m.
Where is the center of mass of the system?
