Question One — Prepared Translations. [15 marks]


Translate the following passages into good English.

(a) Belimicus secum cogitavit et consilium callidum cepit. erant in aula

multae bestiae, quas rex e multis terris importaverat. inter has bestias erat

ursa ingens, quam servus Germanicus custodiebat. Belimicus ad hunc

servum adiit.

“hoc animal est magnificum,” inquit. “me valde delectat. ursam tractare

volo; eam non timeo.”

(b) in urbe erat ingens multitudo, quae vias complebat. mercatores per vias

ambulabant et negotium inter se agebant. feminae et ancillae tabernas

frequentabant; tabernarii feminis et ancillis stolas ostendebant. multi servi

per vias urbis currebant. difficile erat nobis per vias ambulare, quod

maxima erat multitudo.

Claudia Finds a New Husband


A faithful widow mourns her dead husband, until a handsome stranger comes along…

Claudia, femina fidelissima, cum marito diu habitaverat. olim maritus obiit.
femina misera nunc erat vidua. ipsa maritum optimo modo humare volebat.
pompam igitur magnam cum plurimis saltatricibus et citharoedis per vias
lente duxit. tandem omnes ad sepulcrum pervenerunt. servi maritum
mortuum, qui in lecto iacebat, in sepulcro posuerunt. tum, postquam vidua
et una ex ancillis sepulcrum intraverunt, turba abiit.

vidua, quae prope lectum mariti sedebat, diu lacrimabat. “Me miserum!
quid nunc faciam? quis me curabit?” ancilla, cuius dominus perierat, et cuius
domina nunc erat miserrima, lacrimare quoque coepit. post multas horas,
ancilla cibum cupiebat, sed domina exire nolebat. itaque ancilla sola e
sepulcro discessit.
