TYPICAL ITALIAN FOOD

Italian cuisine in general is characterized by its preparations with abundant vegetables,


fruits, meats, fish, rice, pasta and bread.

Northern Italian cuisine


Traditional Northern Italian food is characterized by soups, boiled pasta and meats
boiled in wine and butter. Use less olive oil, tomatoes and dried pasta.
 Carpaccio: This dish consists of slices of raw meat or fish marinated in
lemon juice, olive oil or cheese.

 Risotto: This typical Italian dish is made from rice and cheese. There are
different types of risottos with different ingredients (cheese, pumpkin,
spinach or seafood) that are added to the rice.

On the other hand, among its outstanding sauces are pesto and bolognese.

Southern Italian cuisine


The gastronomy of Southern Italy is characterized by simple dishes. Its main
ingredients are olive oil and vegetables typical of the area. The most popular pasta
dishes in this part of Italy are pizza, spaghetti and macaroni.
 Pizza: Pizza consists of a generally round-shaped bread dough covered
with tomato sauce and other ingredients such as cheese, ham, mushrooms
or olives.

 Macaroni: Macaroni is a pasta made with water, wheat flour and sometimes
eggs. They are shaped like tubes and are usually accompanied by different
types of sauces and cheese.

Cooking in Sicily and Sardinia


Sicilian cuisine features typical Mediterranean dishes, including excellent pasta and
high-quality fish recipes.
Italians eat delicious dishes such as rice balls topped with peas, meat, cheese, or
macaroni with ragout, a tasty sauce made with minced meat.

The cuisine of central Italy


The cuisine of central Italy is characterized by ingredients such as olive oil,
pecorino, legumes, and sausages, as well as the most consumed meats in this
area of Italy: chicken, lamb, pork, goat, rabbit, wild boar, and others.
 Bistecca alla fiorentina: This famous dish from Italy consists of a grilled
veal chop. This dish is very typical of the city of Florence and the Tuscany
region.

 Mazzarelle: Mazzarelle is lamb tripe wrapped in endive leaves tied with


lamb intestines.

Typical dishes of Italy

Pizza
One of the most popular and widespread Italian dishes, it consists of a flour dough
on which mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce are placed, which in turn serve as
a base for a wide variety of ingredients that will then be put into the oven.

Carpaccio

It is a dish prepared with pieces of raw or undercooked meat or fish to which Parmesan
cheese and some typical ingredients of the country are added.

Zampone
This dish is made with pig's trotters that are stuffed with meat. It is served in slices
accompanied with mashed potatoes and white beans or lentils. The dish is served on New
Year's Eve and Christmas.
Parma ham
It is the ham native to the city of Parma, which is recognized worldwide for its quality and
flavor.

Vitello tonnato

This is a dish consisting of beef accompanied by a peculiar sauce made from beaten egg,
tuna and cream.
Calzone

It is a dish prepared in a similar way to pizza, except that it is closed. It can carry various
types of ingredients, such as meats and vegetables.

Milanese risotto

Called Milanese rice in Italian, it is a typical dish from the city of Millán that consists of a
yellow rice made with Parma cheese and saffron that is served hot.

Spaghetti alla Bolognese


It is a typical dish from the city of Bologna where noodles or spaghetti are served with a
meat ragout, which is nothing more than the cooking of the meat in its own essence,
accompanied by spices and vegetables.
TYPICAL ITALY DRINKS
Limoncello is a typical Italian liqueur obtained after the maceration of some type of citrus
or lemon, its flavor is sweet and the region of origin is Campania. Lemon from Lake Garda,
Trieste, Trentino and Sicily are the main ingredient of this drink.

Vermouth is a typical Italian wine with a red color and sweet taste. It is composed of
aromatic and bitter plant substances and its name “Vermouth di Piamonte” is in honor of
the region of Italy where the liquor maker Antonio Carpano prepared it for the first time in
1786.
Vermouth is made from white wine, to which caramel is added for color and sugar for a
sweet taste, as well as other ingredients such as herbs and spices.

SWEETS FROM ITALY


Tiramisu
Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a cold dessert of Italian origin and is made with coffee and a little liquor.
Tiramisu does not have a single recipe, as the solid ingredient that is moistened in coffee
for preparation can be a cookie, sponge cake, nougat, etc.

The cannoli

Cannoli is a typical Sicilian dessert and consists of tube-shaped dough filled with ricotta
cheese mixed with vanilla, chocolate, pistachio, marsala, rose water or other flavorings.
For their presentation, cannoli are usually decorated at the ends with some ingredient
used and you can find them in most pastry shops in Sicily.

CHEESES
In Italy, cheeses are considered a national heritage. Some of the most traditional are
Asiago cheese, perfect to eat alone, or Provolone, suitable to accompany first and second
courses. Also worth mentioning is mozzarella cheese, an ingredient for pizzas or pasta
and vegetable dishes, as well as Gorgonzola, perfect for making appetizers and hors
d'oeuvres.
