(a) 2 (b) 0.2 (c) 20 (d) 200
7. Earthquake produces which kind of sound before the main shock wave begins:
(a) Ultrasound (b) Infrasound (c) Audible sound (d) None of the above
8. The phenomenon of persistence of sound after the source has stopped is called:
(a) Reverberation (b)Echo (c)Resonance (d) Reflection
9. The minimum distance from a sound-reflecting surface required to hear an echo is:
(a) 10 meters (b) 17 meters (c) 20 meters (d) 34 meters
10. Before playing the orchestra in a musical concert, a sitarist tries to adjust the tension and pluck the
string suitably. By doing so, she is adjusting:
(a) Intensity of the sound only
(b) Amplitude of the sound only
(c) Frequency of the sitar with the frequency of other musical instruments
(d) Loudness of sound
1.(a) 2. (c) 3(c) 4(c) 5(b) 6(c) 7(b) 8(a) 9(b) 10(c)
VERY SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS:
1. What are mechanical waves?
2. What are transverse waves?
3. What are longitudinal waves?
4. Name two animals which can produce infrasonic waves.
5. Write the relation between frequency and wavelength.
6. In which medium sound travels fastest.
7. What is reverberation?
SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS:
1. State two laws of reflection of sound.
2. Distinguish between echo and reverberation.
3. What are the applications of a SONAR?
4. Draw labelled diagrams to represent (a) soft sound, and (b) loud sound, of the same frequency in same
graph.
5. Write the applications of multiple reflection of sound
6. State three factors on which speed of sound depends.
7. A boy strikes one end of a long pipe with a stone. Another boy who keeps his ear close to the
other end of the pipe heard two sounds in a short interval of time. Why?
1. Assertion: Echo is produced when sound is incident on hard and polished surface.
Reason: Sound energy can be totally reflected by objects with soft and loose texture.
3. Assertion: A whistle emitting waves of frequency 22000 Hz makes a dog sitting nearby respond.
Reason: Dogs can listen frequency greater than 20000 Hz.
4. Assertion : The particles do not travel all the way from the vibrating object to the ear.
Reason : A particle of the medium in contact with the vibrating object is first displaced from its
equilibrium position.
When an object vibrates, it sets the particle of the medium around the object into vibration. These
vibrating particles exert a force on the adjacent particles of the medium. This makes the adjacent particles
Displace from their mean position. These displaced vibrating particles further disturb their adjacent
particles. This process continues till the sound reaches our ears.
Answer the following:
(a) Name a factor on which the speed of sound depends.
(b) Does speed of sound vary in different directions in a medium?
(c) How does sound travel in a medium?
(d) What is the preferable medium for the motion of sound?
NUMERICALS:
1. A sound wave is moving in air with a velocity of 340 m/s. Calculate the wavelength if its frequency
is: (a) 256 vibrations per second (b) 50 Hz
2. A sound wave has a frequency of 1 kHz and wavelength 40 cm. How long will it take to travel 1.5
km?
3. A stone is dropped into a well 441 m deep. The sound of the splash is heard 3.13 s after the stone is
dropped. Find the velocity of sound in air.
4. Find the distance travelled by a sound wave of frequency20kHz, wavelength 1.7cm in10s.
5. A man standing 48 m away from a wall fires a gun. Calculate the time after which an echo is heard.
(The speed of sound in air is 320 ms−1).
6.
7. The distance between the crest and trough of a transverse wave is 15 cm. What is the velocity of the
wave if its frequency is 1000 Hz?
6. A boy stands 33 m from a high wall and claps his hands. Will he hear a distinct echo? Give reasons
for your answer. (Given velocity of sound is 330 ms-1).
7. Calculate the time taken by a sound wave of frequency 1000 Hz and wavelength 50 cm to travel a
distance of 500 m.
8. a) What is an echo ? How is echo formed ?
(b) What is the minimum distance in air required from a sound reflecting surface to hear an echo (at
20°C) ?
(c) A man standing 825 metres away from a cliff (steep rock) fires a gun. After how long will he hear
its echo ? Speed of sound in air is 330 m/s. (5sec)
