1. What are mechanical waves?
2. What are transverse waves?
3. What are longitudinal waves?
4. Name two animals which can produce infrasonic waves.
5. Write the relation between frequency and wavelength.
6. In which medium sound travels fastest.
7. What is reverberation?
SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS:
1. State two laws of reflection of sound.
2. Distinguish between echo and reverberation.
3. What are the applications of a SONAR?
4. Draw labelled diagrams to represent (a) soft sound, and (b) loud sound, of the same frequency in same
graph.
5. Write the applications of multiple reflection of sound
6. State three factors on which speed of sound depends.
7. A boy strikes one end of a long pipe with a stone. Another boy who keeps his ear close to the
other end of the pipe heard two sounds in a short interval of time. Why?

ASSERTION REASON QUESTIONS:

In each of the following questions, a statement of Assertion is given and a corresponding statement of
Reason is given just below it. Of the statements,
(a) Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
(b) Both assertion & reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but reason is false.
(d) Assertion is false but reason is true

1. Assertion: Echo is produced when sound is incident on hard and polished surface.
Reason: Sound energy can be totally reflected by objects with soft and loose texture.

2. Assertion : Compression and rarefaction involve changes in density and pressure.

Reason : When particles are compressed, density of medium increases and when they are rarefied,
density of medium decreases.

3. Assertion: A whistle emitting waves of frequency 22000 Hz makes a dog sitting nearby respond.
Reason: Dogs can listen frequency greater than 20000 Hz.

4. Assertion : The particles do not travel all the way from the vibrating object to the ear.
Reason : A particle of the medium in contact with the vibrating object is first displaced from its
equilibrium position.

5. Assertion: Noise is irritating for the ears.

Reason: Musical sound consists of regular succession of pulses in which there is no sudden
change in amplitude.

1.(c) 2. (a) 3(a) 4(b) 5(b)

LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS:

1. Explain with the help of diagram, how defects in a metal block can be detected using ultrasound.
2. Briefly explain three uses of ultrasound in the field of medicine.
3. Can transverse wave travel in gas? Can longitudinal wave travel in solid, liquid as well as gas? At any
instant a compression is formed at a point. After how much time (a) a rarefaction (b) a compression
will be formed at the same point?
CASE STUDY BASED QUESTIONS:
The formation of ripples on the surface of water is a good example of wave motion. Here, the water is the
medium of wave motion, the energy carried by the stone disturbs the water molecule close to it. By
gaining energy from the stone, the water molecule near the stone start vibrating up and down. They in
turn produce similar motion in other neighbouring particles. The particles of the medium do not move
forward themselves but the disturbance is carried forward. Wave motion is a disturbance produced in a
vibratory medium that travels from one point to another point involving the transfer of energy but not the
transfer of any matter of the medium with it.

When an object vibrates, it sets the particle of the medium around the object into vibration. These
vibrating particles exert a force on the adjacent particles of the medium. This makes the adjacent particles
Displace from their mean position. These displaced vibrating particles further disturb their adjacent
particles. This process continues till the sound reaches our ears.
Answer the following:
(a) Name a factor on which the speed of sound depends.
(b) Does speed of sound vary in different directions in a medium?
(c) How does sound travel in a medium?
(d) What is the preferable medium for the motion of sound?

2. A sound wave has a frequency of 1 kHz and wavelength 40 cm. How long will it take to travel 1.5
km?
3. A stone is dropped into a well 441 m deep. The sound of the splash is heard 3.13 s after the stone is
