Film Review

3-5 pages

100 pts

For this assignment you will watch a movie from before 1990. You will analyze the
movie from a critical standpoint, looking at the different facets that make up great cinema. When
the Academy sits down to decide who gets an Oscar, they do not simply watch the movie. They
look for symbols, metaphor and an overall message that goes beyond what you see on the screen.
We will be looking at movie reviews, but feel free to look up things other people have said about
the film and see if you agree with their analysis.

Questions to consider:

Did you love it, did you hate it? Why?

Was there a remake? Which one did you like better? Why?

What would it need to make it better?

What are the elements in the movie that stood out to you?

★ Acting
★ Directing
★ Editing
★ Sets
★ Realistic effects

Give a summary of the plot (1-2 pages) and then go into pointed details why you liked or
hated it. Be specific and thorough, that is, explain in detail what happened in the scene you liked
or hated. Make sure that you give a valid explanation beyond simply, “I did not like it because
the acting was cheesy.” What makes the acting cheesy? If you liked a specific metaphor in the
movie, what was it and what is it a metaphor for? Use the Film Vocabulary I give you to explore
the hard work that goes into making a film great.

Additionally, you will be asked to research the time and type of cinema this movie
represents. For example, Gone with the Wind was released and all of Atlanta shut down that day.
It was also the very first movie to use a “curse” word and it caused a huge scandal. When Dirty
Dancing first came out, mothers across the nation were appalled by these lude gestures people
were making in this smut movie. Night of the Living Dead was the very first American Film that
brought people back from the grave in the “zombie” tradition. It was also shot in black and white
to save money, but it adds so much to the movie’s eerie disposition. Tell me about these little
details that make your movie special or unique.
