Assignment Part - A
(M.Phil/PhD)
Page 35 – 40, for data given in Tables 2.13 – 2.20, (i) classify the data in each column as either
qualitative or quantitative; if quantitative, further classify it as discrete or continuous, (ii) identify
the variable under consideration in each case, (iii) determine the type of data/variables in each
column of given tables in terms of either of the four measurements scales: ratio scale, interval
scale, ordinal scale and nominal scale.
In Table 2.13, for the variables “sex”, “received antibiotics”, “received bacterial culture” and
“service” (i) determine a frequency distribution and interpret the results (ii) obtain a relative-
frequency distribution and interpret the results (iii) calculate suitable measure of center, i.e. mode
and interpret the results, (iv) draw a pie chart and (v) construct a bar chart and interpret the
pictures.
In Table 2.13, for the variables “duration of hospitalization”, “age”, “first temp following
admission” and “first WBC following admission”, (i) compute the mean, median, mode and 15%
trimmed mean and interpret the results (ii) determine a frequency distribution using single value
grouping and limit grouping (iii) construct a frequency histogram and discuss on the shape of the
distributions.
In Table 2.13, for the variable “duration of hospitalization”, compute (i) Range, (ii) Standard
Deviation, (iii) Variance, (iv) Interquartile Range, and (v) Mean Deviation (using median). Also,
interpret and compare all the results.
In Table 2.13, for the variable “age”, compute (i) Five-Number Summary, (ii) lower and upper limit
of the data, (iii) point out potential outlier(s), if any, and (iv) construct boxplot and interpret it.

Submission: Solve the assignment manually or using computer services. For calculations, you may use any
software. If so, provide the code and necessary output. Submission deadline will be announced later on.
Honor Code: Every student is required to completely attempt the whole assignment by himself/herself. It
is NEITHER allowed to get it solved by anyone else NOR to copy any part of the solutions. Any type of
cheating observed in submissions may lead to deduction in scores.
